I’ve heard of Spiritual Directors before, but I’m not sure precisely what they are. Are they essentially mentors in people’s spiritual lives? Are they supposed to have any kind of authority over you, or do they just give advice that one can take or leave?

They are sort of like mentors, more like guides. While they do not have authority over you, the SD relationship does involve trust and obedience. Not in the sense that he or she will tell you what to do (for they should not), but they help you listen to the voice of God so you can discern what it is God wants you to do and where God is leading you. They may do this by suggesting certain prayers and practices or asking you to meditate on certain scripture passages. I will be meeting with mine this week to discuss Lent. He will not tell me what I am to do for Lent but we will discuss my ideas and he may or may not come up with a few suggestions. He also helps me with problem areas in my spiriutal life. For example when I am having a dry spell in my prayer life he will encourage me or help me to figure out if there is something in my life that is causing this. He has pointed out sinful areas in my life or things that might be cause for concern.

For someone who is discerning a vocation, he or she might explore reasons why you may be looking at one congregation over another and help you to come to a decision. Or they might explore feelings related to your vocation to see if it really is from God. But a good SD will never tell you what you should do. His or her role is to help you hear God and do God’s will.

Do you think it would be a good idea to wait til college to get a SD? I have been thinking about the religious life and a possible vocation thereto and I have heard that it is a good idea to get one when you are in that situation.

But, my dad says that he thinks my parents should be suficient until I graduate from highschool. What is your take on this?

God Bless

The very reason I got a SD before collage was because I am considering the priesthood. I think that there are some things that a SD can help guide you through that parents can’t. It’s your choice if you want a SD now or if you want to wait till collage.

Thanks for explaining this role to me, Joan. I may start going to a spiritual director for a while- it helps to understand this about their roles.
