First of all, I have a question…

would it be wrong to pray for help for weight loss?

I’m not obese, I just feel horrible and am the largest that I have ever been…got the mid thirty thing going on now…my metabolism is bottoming out…I hate to exercise…I feel like my life is so hectic that I do well to just get a meal cooked, much less worry about the calories involved…I’m lucky if I don’t just grab fast food…

So…

What can help me…what helped you? What did you do spiritually to succeed in weight loss?

God bless.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. Although, I felt vain for asking for Spiritual help in losing weight, lol.

But we should be taking care of our bodies, they are gifts and we get to keep again when our Lord comes back and we are all resurrected.

Exercise is so important and has so many benefits for your body.

I learned that from the book “You: The Owner’s Manual” and “You"On a Diet” (Your local library might have them or retrieve them from another library)
Also, for me the website sparkpeople.com really helped a lot. It’s free and they have forums, videos (many are on youtube), recipes, nutrition tracking, “teams” etc.
Also, an mp3 player, oh boy am I happy I got my little ipod shuffle 😃
It’s very informative. You can do intense workouts that last 10 minutes if you don’t have a lot of time.

For me, when I started out, I really didn’t change what I was eating. Rather I concentrated on doing more exercise and walking so my body could get used to the extra calories being burned.

Then I started being more careful with what I ate and realizing that sometimes I wasn’t getting enough protein and things like that.

It’s been a year and sometimes I have slacked off because I would feel depressed or hopeless, but I’ve lost 20 pounds and exercise is now a part of my life, which is what I am going to do right now.

How do you find out if there are other LightWeigh groups in your area? I’m definitely a follower and am far too shy to start a group (or to even think about it!)!

Light Weigh is for a group setting…I haven’t seen anything in my parish for it…So…

brigid - I wonder if the parish office would know if anyone wants to start or has started a Light Weigh group…I think I’ll call my parish secretary and see if she knows.

God bless.

DJgang,

I heard about the Light Weigh about 6 years ago and didn’t pursue it because there were none in my area and I didn’t want to lead a group. My sister found a diet called “Lean for Life” and she, I and my mom all went on it. It was great, I lost 65 lbs in 5 months. Sounds great, it was. I felt good, was eating healthy and got a quick weight loss which kept me motivated. Then I got pregnant at age 41. My husband and I were excited and I had my daughter 5 days before I turned 42. Well…I gained 50 lbs with the pregnancy and after 2 weeks I lost all but 20. Not bad, but…I tried for 4 years to go back on the diet, knowing it works and knowing I feel healthy on it, but the idea of eating 2 salads a day and a lot of protein, (not as bad as Atkins but a lot) I just couldn’t do it. Cooking 2 meals everyday, seeing my family eat the stuff I wanted to was hard. Post partum depression and other health issues from the pregnancy probably contributed, but 4 years later I find I have gained all my weight back plus some!

Before Christmas I finally got up the courage to get the info for the Light Weigh. After receiving the materials and getting it approved through my local Parish, (they hadn’t heard of it and wanted to be sure it was faithful to the Catholic Church, it was) I finally ran my ad in the Bulletin after Easter. I only had 7 people show for my meeting but 5 people signed up. This allowed me to get my program free!

The program pretty much runs itself. I don’t have to do a lot of preparation and so far everything is going good. I have lost 10 pounds and am praying more and reading the bible more.

I won’t say it is easy but it is the right way of “dieting”. Food is no longer good or bad, just the amount that you eat is controlled. It uses sacrifice, prayer and scripture studies to assist you. Weight loss is secondary and comes once you start changing how you relate to food. You start controlling food, instead of letting food control you.

I plan on doing the “Light Weigh” for as long as it takes to get myself spiritually straightened out. It helps you in more ways then just weight.

Hope this helps.
Mary
