I am married (so not discerning a religious vocation) and am looking to take a retreat (alone)early next year -2007. Can anyone recommend a good retreat center?

There’s nothing better than an Opus Dei retreat, in my experience. Go to the Opus Dei website at www.opusdei.org and send them an email (using the contact link). They will tell you where the nearest center is to you, and you can find a retreat. May God bless you!

Lebh Shomea in Sarita TX (on US 77 just above the checkpoint, closest city is Kingsville) is on Kenedy Ranch land donated by the family to the Oblate Fathers. There are at least two resident hermits who can provide spiritual direction, cottages for long-term stays, and a guest house, the former family residence, for shorter stays. This is a hermitage, a place of silence on ranch land where no hunting is allowed, abundance of birds and wildlife, walking trails, for someone who wants a real retreat, a real separation from daily life for a weekend, week, or longer. They also have a wonderful theology library, and scholars often stay here to do research. They do not do directed retreats or group retreats, they provide the space and the atmosphere of silence. You may schedule a meeting for spiritual direction when you make your reservation. diocese of Corpus Christi can give you contact info, but it is not a diocesan center, it belongs to the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. closest airport is Corpus or Harlingen
the Benedictine Sisters of Starr County have built their monastery in Rio Grande City, the adoration chapel is complete, and the retreat center is nearing completion. They can take individual or small groups for retreats. women stay in the monastery itself, men in smaller guest houses. they can provide a directed retreat for your small group, but the more usual retreatant is an individual who is there to participate in the routine of monastic life: liturgy of the hours, Mass, Adoration, lectio divina, and silence. They especially encourage those women who are discerning vocations. closest airport is McAllen, RGC is on US 83 between Laredo and McAllen, about an hour west of McAllen. I recently did a silent retreat with Opus Dei and there is still quite a lot I am still trying to put into practise.

Broomtree Retreat Center in South Dakota is only a few years old but the retreat director has directed retreats attended by Bishops and he has conducted a two week long retreat for the Sisters of Charity (Mother Theresa’s order). The retreats are based on the Ignatius Spiritual exercises. Personally, I’ve attended two retreats there and planning on my third this Spring.
I know that it is a long ways from Texas but I would welcome the opportunity to drive 10 hours in preparation for the retreat and 10 hours back to allow it to sink in before reentering the temporal world.

depending on where you live in Texas you can drive for 10 hrs and still be in Texas. but your point is very important, the travel time can be an essential part of the retreat, the trip there as a way to take yourself out of your daily routine, get used to solitude and silence, pray for a good retreat. turn off the radio, if you must have music have it be chants, instrumental hymns or something, or a rosary CD.
the trip home, and some quiet time at home before you jump into things is also a key time. the real experience of the retreat actually kicks in during the reflection after the retreat, meditating about insights you had, letting it all sink in. try and get your family to respect your need for more silence for a few days when you get back (yeah, right, I know).
