Spiritualism - sinful?

Yes, I should have said that Saul “sought” Samuel and that the witch “summoned” him. The point was that it was Saul’s intention to do so, which was the sinful part of it. The witch was just “doing her thing”. His intent was flawed.
Please, re-read that passage from 1 Samuel. The witch herself knew that she could die for summoning spirits. So, not only was Saul’s intent flawed and sinful, but so was her action.

:blessyou:

In my mind back then, I thought if I got the ‘spirit’s’ (demons) to quote a prayer, like the Our Father to me, that would be a test. But remember in the Bible, Satan quoted scripture to Jesus. Satan knows scripture, why wouldn’t familiar spirits? Again, if the Bible in scripture forbids it in the OT, why would it be any different now? Remember the new testament, I’ll have to find the verses, I think it was Paul who prayed for spirits to leave a woman that was following them, she was a fortune teller, they put up with her so long and then commanded the demons to leave her.

And regarding Gabriel etc, were they summoned or were the appearances for God’s work? That’s the HUGE difference. Our Blessed Lady wasn’t sitting with a group of friends trying to conjure up spirits… no, she was visited by an angel SENT BY GOD. HUGE difference.

And I’m sorry, it was Deuteronomy 18, I didn’t put the chapter!

11 Nor charmer, nor any one that consulteth pythonic spirits, or fortune tellers, or that seeketh the truth from the dead.

Seeking truth from the dead, necromancy… mediums… God didn’t change His view on that in the NT!

I give up.

I have to find the verses I’m thinking of, I think it was a woman who was following Jesus and the disciples now that I think of it, she was making money for her owners. They put up with her so long and then Jesus ordered the demons to leave her.

Mystic Warrior, please don’t be upset. I’m not trying to attack you or anything. I do firmly believe this though. I knew a lot of people who thought they were psychics too, shoot, I used to BE one! I thank God I was delivered. Was I evil? No, I don’t think so, I was greatly deceived though!!!

It’s not a matter of quoting Scripture or believing that Jesus is the son of God and came in the flesh. The spirit should be able to confess Jesus as their Lord if they are an angel. If they cannot do so after telling you they are an angel, you can conclude that they are a demon.

I didn’t say that it was permissable to speak to the dead (which is necromancy). It was forbidden in the OT to summon them just as it is today according to Catholic teaching. Not everything of truth is in the Bible (as even the CC teaches). There’s Tradition and then there are some things that are just not spoken of.

This is why I don’t debate about spirits and the kinds of them. It usually ends up without any profit to either party. Scripture doesn’t include everything that exists in the universe. It didn’t speak of dinosaurs either, but we have their fossils.

Peace…

They appeared spontaneously as the Lord allowed. Yes, there’s a difference. The point I was making is that God can send an angel to speak to a medium just as he can send an angel to speak to a doctor, a librarian or any other person He deems appropriate. I’m not speaking of people actively seeking this out.

Yes, I realize that God didn’t change His views on that. I’ve spoken to human departed spirits - not because I sought them. They appeared and spoke to me. There’s a difference. If we actively seek them to consult them (as did King Saul) then we are not following God’s law.

No, you were right the first time. It was St. Paul. And she was a fortune teller who was a slave to some men. She made money for them.

I’m not upset, dear sister. I know that. I’m not psychic and don’t desire that. I don’t desire to be a medium either. Some people through no fault of their own can see into the spirit world and are psychic. How do we explain that?

I don’t speak about my work in this forum usually because it just turns ugly. But I’ve worked with both departed humans, angels and demons through no fault of my own. I know the difference between them. They show up without any “conjuring” by me, I deal with them in whatever way I need to and go on with my life.

Peace…

I don’t think conversing, or asking the dead to pray for us is necromancy - attempting to summon them and profit or gain knowledge of the future is wrong and necromancy, but not reverant prayer to ask for intercessions and prayers - after all this is what we do when we pray for help from the saints. In the same way that we can ask our fellow Christians on earth to pray for us, so too can we ask for our departed brethren to pray for us.

At least that’s my understanding!
🙂

And, of course, demons never lie, right?

They can’t repeat the name of Jesus, much less confess Him. If you don’t have anything really helpful to say, just don’t say it at all. Sarcasm is rarely ever helpful. And this is why I don’t talk about it on this forum or in real life too much. Those who don’t seem to know anything about it walk around like they do. By all means, enlighten us “O great Augustine”.

In my dabbling days non of my ‘spirit guides’ claimed to be angels, but they did claim to be from God, they weren’t. I communicated with them via automatic writing and toward the end I was beginning to hear even once seeing the shadow of one… but none said specifically ‘Jesus is Lord’… but I had the Our Father written out via automatic writing. I was still a dabbler and trying to find out if I really was doing God’s will. It was a time in my life I was in such turmoil because every part of me was thinking something is wrong with doing what I’m doing yet the ‘spirits’ (demons) would tell me they were good and from God. Again, I hate typing this because I sound crazy… I sound like a fiction writer making up some story in my head but this had happened to me.

There was a cafe here where psychics & such would gather. It was a favorite hang out for me and a friend of mine. The people that worked there knew us. I need to remember to keep praying for them too. Do I see any of them as evil people? NO! But they were very DECEIVED just like I was!!

All the wiccans I knew claimed to be ‘white witches’ hence my comment to the friend I tried the ouija board with back in the early 90’s… there is no ‘good’ witch… they’re all messing with demonic powers.

What was the rating? The best psychic has a 90% accuracy rate? IF that is true… and IF it were a gift from God, why 90%? Wouldn’t God give a gift that’s 100% accurate? Why 90%?? Enough information was given to hook people in and yet there was always something now and then that was totally false. I don’t want to get too much into the ‘readings’ I used to give people… I’m so away from those days… I’m so NOT the ‘sidekick’ these days. So very thankful to be away from that craziness!

The Luminous Mysteries - Mysteries of Light

God bless!

And BTW, to verify that I did used to be so lost into being a medium & other junk… Yeah, I read the book by James von Pragh, Rosemary Altea, etc… when I look at what scripture tells us, what Jesus tells us, what the Catholic Church tells us, I can NOT equate anything like a medium being a gift from God. Back in my dabbling days oh I wanted to believe I really was exercising a God given gift… but I wasn’t!!! I know that now! All of that is GONE from me! I keep praying to the saints, to Blessed Virgin Mary and to Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I still know people in the new age (old lie) deceptions and I pray for them and all those I babbled my dumb ‘psychic’ (satan’s sidekick) garbage to! I praise God that I’m out of those days and do not miss them at all!

Thank you Jesus and YES I do trust in YOU!

I have to wonder, when is the last time you saw a TV Psychic study Jesus or talk about the Bible or any of that? When was the last time they pointed people to God? That’s another thing to keep in mind. Of course they have info that’s accurate, I did in my dabbling days too BUT… WHERE was it all from? It was NOT from God epecially if it all goes totally against commands in the Bible, God’s WORD!

I was right the first time, it was Paul;

Acts 16 DRB
16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain girl, having a pythonical spirit, met us, who brought to her masters much gain by divining. 17 This same following Paul and us, cried out, saying: These men are the servants of the most high God, who preach unto you the way of salvation. 18 And this she did many days. But Paul being grieved, turned, and said to the spirit: I command thee, in the name of Jesus Christ, to go out from her. And he went out the same hour. 19 But her masters, seeing that the hope of their gain was gone, apprehending Paul and Silas, brought them into the marketplace to the rulers.

She gave the right information but the spirit in her wasn’t from God. Had scripture included more of her time with a ‘spirit’ she probably did give out false information at times. We know the deceiver is the father of lies so anything from him is going to have lies in it… like ‘spirit guides’. It’s the god of this world as opposed to the one true God.

The Ouija Board: A Game or a Gamble? (click URL to read article)

For ‘my own story’ we didn’t have that name… we supposedly had some spirit from Russia and allegedly from one of the dynasties & I researched back then and never found it to be a real person… plus… Yeah, these things knew things but a lot was way off. Too many freaky things happened… would you believe one of the ‘spirits’ told us to get rid of the board after we had it for 3 days… we already opened the door so the board wasn’t needed… we could do automatic writing. but I don’t believe anything of those things we contacted were who they claimed to be.

Quoting from the article listed above
Couldn’t a departed human soul use divination in an attempt to contact the living? No. Our faith teaches us that this cannot be. Once a soul leaves its body, it experiences its particular judgment then goes to one of three places: heaven, hell or purgatory.
Dummy me (yes I was DUMB) after all the goofy stories I heard growing up about things that happened after people died… I bought the lines about how they’re wandering around on earth and interact with us & all that NAM garbage…I’m not there anymore and will never be again. I was very deceived. I thank God that’s my sad sordid past.

So I ask anyone, what do you think TV psychics contact??? I don’t believe any of them have contacted who they think they have. Why would the spirit of a deceased loved one in heaven go totally against God’s will (which we can see plainly in scripture)? I don’t believe in any of that anymore… if in heaven, hell or purgatory they’re not going to be floating around conversing with mediums, necromancers or psychics… or again the spoof that had popped in my head back in those days… ‘satan’s sidekick’. If anything, I have to wonder if that wasn’t my guardian angel trying to let me know what I had walked into… the day that came to me it was so out of the blue. And like I said, I’ve not messed with any of that junk since 2003… don’t even like talking about it much because it’s fresh enough and I’m so thankful I’m not there anymore.

When I finally did return to the Catholic Church, I did have that rosary blessed that I found in pieces back in 2005 and some sacramentals I had gotten back then.

Jesus, be my center and thank you for saving a wretch like me!
I do pray the rosary now.

I also pray for all those I affected in those dumb days of mine, I pray they’re all delivered from it.

Thank You JESUS!

They can’t repeat the name of Jesus, much less confess Him.
Says who? If any human being can, even atheists or Satanists, why wouldn’t angels? Just because the words are uttered, they are not always meant, i.e., they are lies, fruits of the father of lies, satan.

:blessyou:

And asking for intercession from the saints and such isn’t trying to get advice from them. Put it this way, when I was delivered from my ‘familiar spirits’ all that junk left. I haven’t heard phantom footsteps since then or knocking on my door (that happened 3 or 4x, once with someone else and other times alone)… all that junk is gone. Yeah, I’ll have to start with a new priest or try calling my old Church & see if I can get in touch with the priest I was talking to. I’m just glad you all don’t write it off as being crazy because some would. Then others would think it’s the coolest thing and others would see them for what they are.

I’m thankful it’s all gone.
