…so I broke my leg on Friday the 13th. (my tibia). I had surgery and not have a metal rod and screws in me. I am still in a lot of pain because of the swelling.

I am trying to make this experience spiritually beneficial to me. Mother Angelica is one of can think of now who is still alive and goes through pain everyday and can make it spiritual. We should unite our pain with Our Lord’s pain on the cross. I accept this.

The problem is that when one is in so much pain, Satan puts doubts in one’s mind. I am not doubting Christ’s love or pain, I just want ammunition.

Here are some doubts which come up. I know they are not good to believe, but I think if we can answer them here it may help others and may help me to fight off the evil one.

For example, some of us are in pain for days, weeks, months…Christ: maybe 6 or 9 hours. Yes, His pain was intense, but what if our pain is worse, or just longer?

If you knew you could save all humanity from sin wouldn’t you also go through the pain Christ went through?

Christ had His glorified body when he was only 33 and did not experience old age. How do the elderly unite their pain with Him?

Please understand,I am not doubting His love or the sacrifice He made for us. I just want to be able to answer these questions to give me more intellectual ammunition.

God bless you all…

No student will be greater than the teacher. The pain Jesus endured in his Passion is by far the utmost. Keep in mind he carried all the sins and iniquities of the entire mankind.

When Christ went to the Cross, though young at the age of 33, his body was a human body. His body was not glorified yet, not until his resurrection. Jesus endured 5480 wounds according to the revelation Saint Bridget has received. And none of the wound was a small wound. Can you imagine the intensity of our Lord’s pain?

God will not let anyone carry the yoke beyond his ability. Young or old, we can unite our pain with Him with a loving and willing heart.

I pray you will have a speedy and smooth recovery.

St Ignatius Loyola actually experienced his spiritual conversion while recovering from a difficult and painful broken leg - sounds similar to your situation. Maybe get into reading his Spiritual Exercises or something?

Pray to him and to Our Lord to show you how to use this time to deepen your faith and understanding.

And remember that Christ’s pain, whatever it looks like to us, had to be enough to redeem all the sins of all people for all time … that means a level of pain beyond the experience or comprehension of any of us.

Once I suffered a painful medical condition, and aware that God
is close to the suffering, decided to pray for a couple I know who
had been divorced for 2 years. Whenever it really felt painful, I
prayed for this couple to get back together. It was only one year
later, they did get back together. I do not know if the suffering
helped my prayer, but I think it did. I knew to tell God I trusted
Him even if they didn’t get back together.
