Bishop Fulton J. Sheen’s Prayer for the Spiritual Adoption of an Unborn Child.

The following prayer is said every day for one whole year.
**
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I love you very much;
I beg you to spare the life of the unborn child that I have spiritually adopted, and who is in danger of being aborted.**

During your earthly life, this child which you have adopted will be known only to God, but in the hereafter, you will enjoy each other’s company for all eternity.

This could be a very powerful weapon against the culture of death.

This idea is just like sponsoring a child who lives in poverty. A lot of people do this because then they can ‘see’ the results of their donation. However, it might not be the best way to help solve poverty (1 child at a time), it can be said that making a donation which supports poor people in general is a better way to go even though you don’t get to directly see the good you’ve done.

In a similar way, we could say, why pray for just 1 unborn child in danger of being aborted when we could pray for all of them?

Don’t you suppose that God knows which unborn children need it th most? Besides…what do ya think all those Rosaries are for? 👍

At the end of every mass we pray for the lives of the babies we have spirtually adopted… The prayer we say is a lot longer than this, but it has these words in it too. It is beautiful. We are blessed to have a priest who doesn’t shy away from those things.

We just started spiritual adoption in our parish this October for Respect Life Month and began with all religious education classes. Our parish is now praying for over 300 unborn babies for the next nine months. Then we’ll have a “birthday party” in May and people are invited to bring gifts that we’ll donate to our local Birthright. We’re also having monthly bulletin inserts to show how our babies are growing and changing each month.

We do that too… It is really great. We have readers that get up and give the updates at mass… sometimes the readers are kids.

This sounds great!!!

One question, though.

Do you have specific babies in mind from persons in your parish, or is it kind of a general thing?

I only ask this because one poster mentioned bulletin inserts representing growth, etc…

Good luck and God Bless!!! 👍

It’s not someone we know personally (although if you do, pray for them as well!), but we adopt them spiritually, choose a boy or girl, give them a name and trust that God knows exactly who we are praying for.

One of the third-graders asked if they got to meet the babies they were praying for when they were born. I told them that we don’t know for sure where our baby is – he/she could be anywhere in the world! But when we get to heaven, through the grace of God, we will be able to meet that child who will come up to us and say “Thank you for praying for me – your prayers helped me to be born safely and I had a great life, in part, because of you!” They thought that was really cool!

This is a great idea you guys. I wonder if my pastor would give it a go in our Parish? I think I’ll see if there’s any extra space in the bulletin. If so, I’ll see if the abbreviated prayer could be added, along with a suggestion of adopting an at risk child.

Thanks for the Thread!

This is a great idea. I have some questions:
  1. Do you name the child?
  2. Can you spiritually adopt more than 1 child a day?

I suppose that you can do those things if you wish.

People adopt multiple children all the time in life…why not the unborn and endangered?

I say that prayer every day, as well as a decade of the Rosary for my spiritually adopted child 👍

It’s a lovely practice.

I don’t think you should name the child - won’t their own parents name them (you’d hope)?

It would do well to pray for all unborn children as well as provide any material effort we can in their plight. We should not presume to say that if a certain prayer is said, then a child will be spared its life. We need to pray and beg for God’s mercy on us and to express our yearning for the lives of the unborn. We need to trust in His wisdom and that He hears both our prayers and those of the innocents’ crying out to heaven for His justice. They will not go unanswered. Pray for His mercy and that we may be spared His wrath.

In Christ - J.M.J.

This is a beautiful thing and I will most definitely be saying this prayer several times a day.

I’ve done this ever since finding a prayer card about it in my father’s things after he died. I say the prayer with grace at breakfast each morning. This card recommended you pray for one child for a year, and I am currently praying for the third child.

The wording I have is, “O my Jesus, through the intercession of Mary your mother, who bore you so lovingly, and St Joseph, strong man of faith who protected you both, I pray to you for the child in danger of abortion that I have spiritually adopted. Please give to the parents of this child the courage and grace to bring it to the life you have destined for it.”
