Hello friends,

I have always found music to be a great way to experience God’s love. I was raised in a very musically-oriented faith tradition (Mormonism) and feel like, thus far, my experiences with music in the Catholic Church have been very limited. I’m not sure if the Catholic Church is less “into” music or if I just haven’t yet discovered the depth of Catholic music.

So, are there resources where I can find traditional Catholic music? Any particular songs you really enjoy and would love to recommend?

And, going a non-traditional route, I’d love some suggestions for Catholic/Christian rock, too.

It depends what you mean by spiritually uplifting music, personally all that gospel rock stuff leaves me cold! I really fail to see how anyone could accuse the Catholic Church of NOT having a culture of music, Albinoni, Pachelbel, Palestrina, Bach, Haydn, Beethoven to name but a very few all composed the most beautiful music for use in the liturgy - all were Catholic. But then it depends what floats your boat.
 
And Mozart, Verdi, Haydn, etc, etc. There is a rich history of Catholic Sacred music - and it’s all out on youtube!
 
For Catholic rock, check out Matt Maher. I love him. Look up “The End and The Beginning” on youtube. It is all about Transubstantiation. LOVE it. 👍
 
Thank you so much for the suggestions! I should have qualified what I am looking for (of course classical music!). Posting so late at night is not wise…

I suppose I am looking for “hymns”. Prayers set to music. At my parish, we seem to only sing the same pieces each week, with only changes with liturgical seasons. Except for the psalm, of course. Is there a library I can find online?

The Mormon Church has a book of hymns and a book of children’s hymns. Growing up, I loved to play them on the piano. It was one way I would pray.

I’ve been on the hunt for what you’ve described as well. It’s hard to find! Matt Mahler has a rosary album that is quite nice, and L’Angelus has an album of hymns (and a great Christmas album).
