The Southern Poverty Law Center’s current *Intelligence Report *carries a series of rather schizophrenic articles on “radical traditionalist Catholics.” It puts forth the theory that those…
*"…who reject the teachings of the modern papacy, may form America’s largest group of anti-Semites." Source: *
http://www.splcenter.org/intel/intelreport/article.jsp?aid=719 (Warning: The very first word in the article is an obscenity).*Yet, in a sidebar article, entitled, “The Dirty Dozen” it almost seems to diminish the influence of the “rad trads” and states…
There are hundreds of traditionalist Catholic chapels around the United States that celebrate the Latin Tridentine Mass and dislike many of the liberalizing reforms enacted by the Second Vatican Council of the 1960s. But only a handful of these organizations qualify as part of the “radical traditionalist Catholic” movement that is characterized by open anti-Semitism and blames Jews for conspiring to destroy the Catholic Church and a number of other iniquities. The movement is far from unified, with these groups engaging in seemingly endless infighting and now splintered into an array of very small groups. But wait, there’s another reversal…
Yet the ranks of the radical traditionalists seem to be swelling. Michael Cuneo, a scholar of Catholicism, wrote in his 1997 book The Smoke of Satan that weekly attendance at American chapels of the Society of St. Pius X had been growing at about 10% annually since the late 1980s. There are also articles about Catholic Church consipiracy theories, the SSPX, and the usual diatribes against “anti-semite” Mel Gibson and “racist” Pat Buchanan.

There are no articles about historic anti-Catholicism in America or the current wave of not-so-subtle defamation against Catholicism coming from every quarter of the media.

There are some nice things said in the articles about the modern Church, but overall I found the overall tone to be pretty much of a putdown of traditional Catholics whether they are of the “radicial” variety or not. But, you can decide for yourself.

These men have said more than a few things to give the impression that they are such, even if they aren’t such in fact.

There doesn’t have to be. The subject wasn’t about anti-Catholicism. And, even if one felt obligated to include such mention, such historical anti-Catholicism would have been directed against the Church in general, not against the radical traditionalists.

Morris Dees of the SPLC is a huckster. If he can extort money out of people ala the shakedown tactics of Jesse Jackson, he will.
The SPLC takes in tons of donations but their “research” seems to consist of mostly browsing the websites and forums of those groups they deem “extremist” and reporting on the findings.
Today, the SPLC spends most of its time–and money–on a relentless fund-raising campaign, peddling memberships in the church of tolerance with all the zeal of a circuit rider passing the collection plate. “He’s the Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker of the civil rights movement,” renowned anti- death-penalty lawyer Millard Farmer says of Dees, his former associate, “though I don!t mean to malign Jim and Tammy Faye.” The Center earned $44 million last year alone–$27 million from fund-raising and $17 million from stocks and other investments–but spent only $13 million on civil rights program , making it one of the most profitable charities in the country.
The Ku Klux Klan, the SPLC’s most lucrative nemesis, has shrunk from 4 million members in the 1920s to an estimated 2,000 today, as many as 10 percent of whom are thought to be FBI informants http://www.servtech.com/~grugyn/kkk-5.htm . But news of a declining Klan does not make for inclining donations to Morris Dees and Co., which is why the SPLC honors nearly every nationally covered “hate crime” with direct-mail alarums full of nightmarish invocations of “armed Klan paramilitary forces” and “violent neo-Nazi extremists,” and why Dees does legal battle almost exclusively with mediagenic villains-like Idaho’s arch-Aryan Richard Butler-eager to show off their swastikas for the news cameras.
In 1987, Dees won a $7 million judgment against the United Klans of America on behalf of Beulah Mae Donald, whose son was lynched by two Klansmen. The UKA’s total assets amounted to a warehouse whose sale netted Mrs. Donald $51,875. According to a groundbreaking series of newspaper stories in the Montgomery Advertiser, the SPLC, meanwhile, made $9 million from fund-raising solicitations featuring the case, including one containing a photo of Michael Donald’s corpse.

Not that this is my favorite group, but I don’t get the criticism.

It sounds to ME like they are saying:

Not all of those who prefer TLM are antisemites by a long shot. They seem to note NO correlation with folks who attend indult TLM (though they don’t use that word). They seem to imply a greater tendency towards anti-semitism amongst those who see Vatican II as an invalid council and subsequent popes as phony.

It’s an interesting hypothesis that might actually be worth looking at. It’s hard to argue that the church had better relations with Jews before VII than today…

Consider the source of the attack.
The SPLC is just another leftwing agitation group who will call anyone a racist, bigot, whatever, if those people don’t 100% toe the current liberal line. Just like the ADL whose leader sees antisemites hiding behind every rose bush.

ADL leader Abraham Foxman sees alot of those antisemites in the Catholic Church…“educates” the masses about the “december dilemma” where all this talk about Christ at Christmas is insensitive to those who don’t worship him. Funny that Abe is so critical of the Catholic Church considering that by his own words it was a Catholic family that saved him during WW2. They baptised him too, if I recall correctly.

Foxman strikes me as a paranoid maniac.

And he looks like NEWMAN on Seinfeld, too.
