Yes, a lay person can baptize in the case of emergency.
From the *Catechism of the Catholic Church:
*1256 The ordinary ministers of Baptism are the bishop and priest and, in the Latin Church, also the deacon.57 In case of necessity, anyone, even a non-baptized person, with the required intention, can baptize58 , by using the Trinitarian baptismal formula. The intention required is to will to do what the Church does when she baptizes. The Church finds the reason for this possibility in the universal saving will of God and the necessity of Baptism for salvation.59

1284 In case of necessity, any person can baptize provided that he have the intention of doing that which the Church does and provided that he pours water on the candidate’s head while saying: “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
In the Name, of the Father,Son,Holy Spirit! Singular…Name, not names, plural… Question, what is the singular Name of the Father,Son,Spirit?

Thanks
Bar.

Acts 19
Just a thought, but Paul met some of Johns’ disciples on the road to Damascus, and asked if they have received the Spirit, since becoming a believer in Christ. They mentioned that they hadn’t heard about this. Paul asked of what baptism did they receive? They said, “Johns’ baptism!” Whereby Paul states that water baptism was a baptism of repentance, and that a baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus was necessary, and they were baptised and received the Holy Spirit, as Paul laid his hands upon them, and signs of the gifts of the Spirit were manifest, on the twelve,.,

John preached that he baptised in water, but Jesus would baptise with the Holy Spirit John 1:33. Gotta wonder why these 12 who had received water baptism, said they hadn’t heard about Spirit baptism.? Guess Apollos hadn’t either, Acts 18: 23–26. till Aquilla and Priscilla took him aside and explained to him what he was missing!

The singular “name” is used instead of the plural “names” because it shows the unity of the Trinity and emphasizes their oneness. One God in three persons.

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church:
233 Christians are baptized in the *name *of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit: not in their names,55 for there is only one God, the almighty Father, his only Son and the Holy Spirit: the Most Holy Trinity.

Hmmm, Since God is a Spirit, and Jesus was, and is GOD. Then wouldn’t baptising in the Name of Jesus, satisfy the singular Name! ??

Bar,

NO

The emergency Baptism must be done 'according to the book ’
"I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."
The words quoted there must be used

Then what would be the initiates fruit be in keeping with repentance, as John declared to the pharisees and sadducees who were coming for this baptism? Matt. 3:5,6,7,8.

If we are to always do according to the book, then what are you going to do, when it says, " if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out!"

Does one take the bible literally? Or with spiritual understanding? Or both? But then, of course, one would need to know what is to be taken literally, and what is to be taken spiritually… knowing that the Letter kills, but the Spirit of the letter giveth LIFE!

So, maybe we need the one who wrote the book to give us the understanding of the spiritual meaning of what is written, amen?

Bar,
Are you talking about baptizing someone by saying “I baptize you in the Name of Jesus” or “I baptize you in the name of the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit”? Both would be considered invalid since the formula that has been decided by the Church is " I baptize you in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit". This is the very same thing Jesus tells his apostles in Matthew 28:19.

Marty, since Jesus is the Holy Spirit, and Jesus is God, then baptising in His name is legal, and right, and all encompassing.

Remember Marty, water baptism doesn’t save anyone. It is believing in Christ, and His atonement that does. Water baptism is an outward sign of an inward confession of repentance through sorrow.

And since repentance is marked by this fruit, which are tears of sorrow, and this sorrow is caused by God alone, 2 Corinthians 7: 10 For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation; but the sorrow of the world produces death.

Amen.

Jesus is God but Jesus is not the Holy Spirit. Baptising in Jesus’ name alone does not invoke the fullness of the Trinity.

Corki, I am sorry to break your bubble, but Jesus is the Holy Spirit! GOD IS A SPIRIT. John 4:24 And that Spirit/God came to live in a flesh body named Jesus. For God/Spirit was in Christ, reconciling the world back unto Himself.

Secondly Corki baptism has no purpose in invoking the fullness of the trinity. At the time of the first water baptisms by John, there was no definition of the trinity that they would have invoked to all those that John and others baptised.!

Baptism is an outward sign of what the initiate believes in his heart in regards the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. In which immersion into the water illustrates… The death of the old man, his burial, and the new man coming forth from the water/resurrection… 1 Peter 3:21…

Also note, 1 Corinthians 10:1,2…For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; and all were baptized unto Moses, in the cloud, and in the sea.

You will notice two elements in baptism. The cloud, and the sea. Just as crossing the Red sea, was a baptism of exiting Egypt /the world, and then crossing the Jordan, as exiting the flesh, to enter the promised land.

Yes, we do need the one who wrote the book to give us the understanding of the spiritual meaning of what is written, and that is exactly how the Catholic church operates. She has been given the Holy Spirit to guide her and interpret the Book in the correct way throughout the millennia so that her members enjoy the benefit of understanding the Scriptures correctly in both the spiritual and literary sense.

If you have not had the benefit of the teaching and guidance of the Holy Spirit through the Church Christ established to help you on your spiritual journey, may I suggest you contact your nearest Catholic parish and sign up for RCIA and learn what has been passed on from the Apostles and protected and guided by God Himself for 2000 years. Learn the Truth, and it will set you free and you will also learn to stop trying to bait people using the Sacred word of God.

I also invite you to attend Mass and experience true worship of the Triune God as found in the Catholic Church.

BTW, your prosetylizing efforts are not appreciated in these forums and may result in your being banned from them. Also, there is no point in you trying to “save” those who already believe. Save your breath for unbelievers. You’re wasting your time otherwise.

You do realize that this sub forum is about Catholic Liturgy and Sacraments, right?

CCC
254 The divine persons are really distinct from one another. "God is one but not solitary."86 “Father”, “Son”, “Holy Spirit” are not simply names designating modalities of the divine being, for they are really distinct from one another: "He is not the Father who is the Son, nor is the Son he who is the Father, nor is the Holy Spirit he who is the Father or the Son."87 They are distinct from one another in their relations of origin: "It is the Father who generates, the Son who is begotten, and the Holy Spirit who proceeds."88 The divine Unity is Triune.
1213 Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua),4 and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: "Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word."5
And if you want to talk about the Red Sea, start with CCC 1221.

Hi Carolyn. Beloved of Christ. one is saved through belief in the gospel of Christs death, burial, and resurrection. So there is no point in trying to save the saved, now is there?

The leading and teaching of the Holy Spirit is for every believer Carolyn, not just the church. Read Romans 8… Or John chapter 13,14,15,and 16, and find what Jesus said, that the Holy spirit was for all believers, and what the job of the Holy Spirit is for.\

Amen.

Bar,
I think Jesus has a say in this. He said:
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
So, He says that all authority is given to Him. He then tells us how to baptize.
Then He says:
20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
He just said to baptize them, " in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." So the entirety of the Church has obeyed Him, baptizing using the words He said.
It seems an open and shut case to me. 🤷

Hi Carolyn. Beloved of Christ. one is saved through belief in the gospel of Christs death, burial, and resurrection. So there is no point in trying to save the saved, now is there?
Oh? The protestant interpretation of ‘heaven’ includes lucifer? 😉

Marty, since Jesus is the Holy Spirit, and Jesus is God, then baptising in His name is legal, and right, and all encompassing.
JL: Christ isn’t the Holy Spirit nor the Father but the Son. Christ commaded to baptize in the NAME (singular) of the ONE GOD. In that one God are three indivisible persons Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The one NAME into which all are to be baptized.

So you are a oneness pentecostal? Believing one God, ACTING, as three different persons or rolls. I would guess you belong to The United Pentecostal Church, is that correct?
Remember Marty, water baptism doesn’t save anyone. It is believing in Christ, and His atonement that does. Water baptism is an outward sign of an inward confession of repentance through sorrow.

And since repentance is marked by this fruit, which are tears of sorrow, and this sorrow is caused by God alone, 2 Corinthians 7: 10 For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation; but the sorrow of the world produces death.
JL: Faith ALWAYS comes first but FAITH ALONE doesn’t save, [Jms2:24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and NOT BY FAITH ONLY.]

One is not BORN AGAIN and delivered a child of God till baptized. [Gal 3:26 For **YE ARE all the CHILDREN OF GOD by faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For AS MANY of you AS HAVE BEEN BAPTIZED into Christ HAVE PUT ON CHRIST.]

According to scripture baptism is a part of salvation, sanctifying, regenerating washing away our sins, renewing of the Holy Spirit making us children and heirs.

[1Pt3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, **eight souls were SAVED BY WATER. 21 THE LIKE FIGURE whereunto even BAPTISM DOTH also NOW SAVE US (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:]

[Eph5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 **That he might SANCTIFY and CLEANSE it WITH THE WASHING OF WATER BY THE WORD,] How are we sanctified and cleansed by WASHING OF WATER by the WORD.

[Act22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and **BE BAPTIZED, and WASH AWAY THY SINS, calling on the name of the Lord.] How does scripture tell us we are REGENERATED?

[TITUS 3:5 **Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he SAVED us, BY the WASHING OF REGENERATION, and RENEWING OF the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; 7 That BEING JUSTIFIED by his grace, we should be made HEIRS according to the hope of eternal life.

[1Cor6:11 And such were some of you: **BUT YE ARE WASHED, but ye are SANCTIFIED, but ye are JUSTIFIED in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.]

Believing (faith) is the conception of life. An adult comes to faith thru hearing the Word and God’s free gift of faith. Then that adult makes a decision to accept or reject that Word of God. If they accept they must REPENT, be BAPTIZED FOR remission of sins and they shall RECEIVE the gift of the Holy Spirit. Being BORN AGAIN by WATER and of the HOLY SPIRIT, as Christ tells us in Jn3:5. Peter tells us clearly in Acts2 how one is set on the road to salvation.

[Acts2:37 Now **WHEN THEY HEARD this, THEY WERE PRICKED IN THEIR HEART, AND SAID unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, WHAT SHALL WE DO? 38 Then PETER SAID unto them, REPENT, and BE BAPTIZED EVERY ONE OF YOU in the name of Jesus Christ FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS, and ye shall RECEIVE the gift of THE HOLY GHOST. The PROMISE is unto you, AND to your CHILDREN, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the LORD our God shall call.]

Peter said, REPENT, BE BAPTIZED EVERY ONE OF YOU FOR remission of sins, RECEIVE the gift of the Holy Spirit. If baptism was a outward sign of inward repentence instead of a Sacrament. Peter should have said, Since you now believe you have received the Holy Spirit. Now you can be water baptized as an outward sign of an inward confession of repentance. I challenge you to post one scripture saying baptism is an outward sign of an inward confession of repentance. You wont because you can’t. It’s simply a tradition of men to nullify the Word.

[Acts2:40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, **SAVE YOURSELVES from the untoward generation. 41 THEN they that gladly RECEIVED his word were BAPTIZED: and the SAME DAY were ADDED UNTO THEM about three thousand souls. 42 And THEY CONTINUED stedfastly IN THE APOSTLES’ doctrine and FELLOWSHIP, and in BREAKING OF BREAD (Mass), and in PRAYERS.]

Notice Peter says SAVE YOURSELVES. How? By being BAPTIZED thru which they WERE ADDED to that ONE VISIBLE Apostolic Fellowship the Body of Christ the Church. They continued in the APOSTLES doctrine, fellowship, breaking of Bread=Mass.

Remember Paul had a life changing encounter with Christ, yet he was told to be baptized and wash his sins away. Paul didn’t receive the Holy Spirit when he had his conversion experience and first believed.

[Acts9:8 And **Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus. 9 And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink. 10 And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord.]

[Acts9:17 And **Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, AND be filled with the Holy Ghost. 18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, AND arose, and WAS BAPTIZED. 19 And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus.]

Three days later Ananias laid hands on Paul and he received his sight immediately. THEN Paul arose to be baptized, to remit and wash away his sins, and receive the Holy Spirit. Being BORN AGAIN by water AND of the Spirit, as Christ tells us in Jn3:5. As Peter tells us in Acts2:38 repent, be baptized FOR remission of sins, RECEIVE the gift of the Holy Spirit. By the way Paul was probably baptized by pouring as he stood. He was baptized in a house.

why use three names to baptize?
Because such is the command of the Lord:
Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit
We know that there is only one God, and we know His ineffable name, but we baptize “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”. If you are truly asking why we do not actually pronounce the ineffable Name, then you may be unaware of the fact that the Hebrew law forbid so, and thus we have respectful expressions such as Elohim and Lord…even the Lord used the words Father or Abba’.

A similar - yet not as strict - reasoning is made with the name of Jesus, that within itself contains the ineffable Name of God. Which is why the Apostle wrote:
Wherefore also God highly exalted him, and gave unto him the name which is above every name; that in the name of Jesus every knee should bow
Indeed, we refer to our Beloved as Lord and Christ.

one is saved through belief in the gospel of Christ
This contradicts the words of the Lord:
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in heaven.
The Apostle s. James was very clear:
Even so faith, if it have not works, is dead in itself.
Thou believest that God is one; thou doest well: the demons also believe, and shudder.
But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith apart from works is barren?
Ye see that by works a man is justified, and not only by faith.
For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.
