SPLIT: Good Mass hymns/settings

I’m one of those people lucky enough to not deal with those awful Haas/Haugen tunes; however, our choir only consist of myself, the cantor, the cantor’s wife, and the organist’s husband. Every one of us HATES those setting, and has refused to use them time and time again; we’ve always used the Missa de Angelis settings for even the NO mass. However, all the parishes south of us with the bigger choirs just have to drive us up the wall with the same folk-tuned, banal, tone-deaf hymnody. If I have to listen to “On Eagle’s Wings” on more time, I’m going to snap.

As far as “settings” I feel like you can’t beat the chant settings we already have. When it comes to hymns though, I’d be a proponent of
  1. The propers
  2. True Traditional Hymnody (not Haugen and Hass)
  3. Appropriated Contemporary Christian Worship Music (something I go in further detail on my blog)

Oh, I would love to have you at our parish!

We’ve been practicing the new Gloria and Sanctus without music. Then Father put it to music … it’s terrible, like those hokey folk hymns from high school.

I’m so saddened … The closest church without all this nonsense is a three hour drive.

Music is so integral to prayer.
 
So far, I am having good luck with Mass of Creation. As we are having to adapt to the new words, it is a good bridge for us. We still have Jubilate Dei to use as needed. I will not add another English setting until we have all gotten used to the new translation.

I understand that the staff musicians have a built in problem, namely, that the publishing house has a financial incentive to use their stuff even if it is mediocre. As Advent approaches, I am looking forward to one of the few, maybe the only, Marty Haugen song I really like a lot; My Soul in Stillness Waits.

I swear, 90% of the funerals I go to have this song somewhere in them. The funeral is bad enough without this cheesy song in it. Ugh!

Now, now, they’re just checking to make sure the guy is really dead. No rolling of eyes? No gagging? Ok, dead. We can go on now.

Fair enough. Looks like we’ve got a deal. Maybe JGMendes can fix the drum kit while we’re at it.
