SPLIT: How to deal with dull homilies?

Better a dull homily by an active ordained Catholic than a -]dull/-] homily by a layperson during Mass (replacing that from the priest), which some of us have to continue to endure on a regular basis.

Isn’t that forbidden? I thought that only the priest or the deacon could give homilies. Perhaps you should contact your bishop?

The homily has always been a non-essential part of the Mass, so as a previous poster mentioned, I’d start reading the saints if you’re looking for some good, solid spiritual nourishment.

Really? Since when did the Homily become Non-Essential?

Aside from honing in more profoundly on the teaching of the Liturgy of the Word for the Daily Mass the Homily should also present a chance for a priest to hone in teachings concerned with Apologetics and/or Morals in the Church as a way of instructing the Faithful. I don’t think 10-15 minutes of instructional teaching in the Homily falls outside of the norm of the G.I.R.M.

Priests are shepherds of the Church who have the rightful task and obligatory duty of instructing the Faithful on the Spiritual Teachings of the Church. What better to avail this time in the Homily? When the Flock in the Church isn’t being spiritually fed beyond the Liturgy of the Word by instruction, the Flock grows weak.

Would it be fair to respectfully say that some priests have neglected their calling in this area? Granted not all priests are gifted speakers.
Not every Catholic has access to costly spiritual books etc.

As the Faithful we are obligated to pray and support our beloved priests to the best of our abilities. We could also pray for our priests while he’s giving his homily.

[edited] Well what I’m looking to find help with is the fact that I get distracted if the priest doesn’t relate to what is going on in is homily. For instance, we have a wonderful priest whose homilies I can’t wait to hear. He interacts, he sings. Mass feels like a celebration. I’m touched every time. I even made an appointment to meet with him to tell him my fears. I make sure I go to all his masses. Now the other priests have an older style. This past Sunday, the other priest spoke for quite a long time referring to verses. I felt so deflated because I did not feel renewed like I do with the the priest I made sure I hear. How do you deal with this. I lost my husband recently and I desparately need to tap into my spiritual side. I have friends who found what they were looking for in other denominational churches. I don’t want to do that. I love the parish, love the style of one particular priest but am afraid of not pursuing spirituality if I don’t feel anything. HELP. I need advice.

Sorry I can’t relate. I go to mass for Jesus who along with my brothers and sisters around me witness Calvary and get to receive Christ in the Eucharist. My faith hinges not on a homily. Sounds like you are looking in the wrong place regarding mass.

You make it sound like the Homily is a waste of time within the Sacred Liturgy of the entire Mass.
