I challenge you IAMNOTAFRAID (who is very afraid! and still a catholic albeit an angry one) to ask God to show you the truth of your errors. ]
I’m regretting having chosen that name…I should have chosen something neutral like’

Beige_12345.

Then I wouldn’t have given all of my accusers, ammunition in which to hurl at me, that I am terrified of their Gods horrific wrath and special place of agony, that he so lovingly created, for just my type.

Unbelievers. :rotfl:

I’ll pass on this particular challenge.

I’ve taken up other Challenges from Catholics and Protestants alike, who assured me, that if I prayed to the Lord, he would reveal himself to me…

I did, back to my old ways, I prayed and asked the Lord to help me out with my unbelief.

In reply…the sound of silence, the same silence I’d experienced my entire life.

but why penance if Jesus is there, in the confessional along with the priest and me a sinner am broken of the sin i’ve committed against God and whoever i’ve might hurt by my sin, isn’t my confession enough? isn’t my repentance enough? would not God forgive me if i humbled myself in humility confessing my sin? if so, then why the extra ‘penance’?

thank you for the replies

God Bless

It’s payback.

Your going to get stories about kids breaking windows, it’s not good enough just to say sorry, the kids has to repair the damage done to the window.

Am I right, huh huh huh?

yada yada yada

Yes, it is no surprise that “personal responsibility” does no resonate with you.

Penance is an outward sine of your repentence. If you go to this Catechism section:
vatican.va/archive/catechism/p2s2c2a4.htm
…it will explain penance somewhere around the middle of the page.

See my signature, summed up, quite nicely.
I live in a natural world.
Within a natural universe.
Absent of any evidence of a supernatural God.
I am not afraid.
The entire Universe is evidence of God. Where do you think it came from, a CrackerJack box? Or maybe it just magically appeared out of nowhere?

You want me to read something the Roman catholics have written. That’s like the police force investigating itself, it dosen’t work, like shooting yourself in the foot. Ralph
If you want the Truth, you have to go to the source of the Truth, and that would be God’s Word-JESUS, …and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

Surely you knew that Jesus is the Word of God in the Flesh, the Incarnation, the Only Begotton Son of God, the 2nd person of the Blessed Trinity, God the Son, thats JESUS.

The Catholic Church STILL hands on all of HIS teachings, always has, always will.

You’ll get parts of the truth here and there in other denominatoins but in the Church that HE founded, you will get the FULLNESS of the TRUTH, JESUS HIMSELF-
Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity. As Jesus Himself said…“Take, eat.” (you didn’t think He meant for you to eat the Bible did you?)😃

The onus is on you to prove the existence of your God, not on I, to prove his non-existence.

You believe by faith and not by evidence.

You also suggest that if something is not known, it must have a supernatural explanation.

If you want the Truth
I suspect, that after your opening sentence, a much different answer would follow, if written by a Hindu, Muslim, Scientologist, Sikh, Jew, Krishna or Buddhist.

No?

The onus is on you to prove the existence of your God, not on I, to prove his non-existence…
No. You believe that the Universe came from somewhere other than God. I would like to know from where and how.

And if you say that you don’t know from where or how, then you cannot say that there is no God, because by your own admission you do not know.

See my signature, summed up, quite nicely.
Your sig says this:

I live in a natural world.
Within a natural universe.
Absent of any evidence of a supernatural God.
I am not afraid.

I suggest to you that you live in God’s world
Withing His universe
He is not absent to you, He is right here with us-
That is why you aren’t afraid.

Now hell is another topic altogether and I do believe
He’d be absent to you there and you’d have every reason
to be afraid. I gave you, much earlier in this thread the links
to the Last Things, did you read them?

I suspect, that after your opening sentence, a much different answer would follow, if written by a Hindu, Muslim, Scientologist, Sikh, Jew, Krishna or Buddhist.

No?
Or even you, NO?!😛
(so what is TRUTH to you?)

No confession is NOT enough. SIN has 2 consequences: 1) Eternal offense to God and 2) Temporal debts and consequences. If you break my window and ask me for forgiveness I can forgive you but there is still the matter of the broken window to deal with. As a matter of justice one must also seek to restore what was broken if possible. Or if I damaged your reputation and asked for your forgivness and you forgave me how do I restore your reputation? The damage is done. Prayer is a means by which we can help restore damage by sin - to ourselves, to others, to nature, to the church. Paul understood this.

*Col 1:24
Now I can find joy amid my sufferings for you, and I fill up in my own person whatever is lacking in Christ’s afflictions on behalf of His Body, the Church. *

Every sin causes us and others to suffer one way or another. Sin creates a disorder of the soul and distorts our desires, and affection and leaves us with an unhealthy attachment to creatures. We must purify this either here or later after death (purgatory) before going to heaven. After being sacramentally forgiven of sin we always must still face the difficult and painful process (the temporal penalty of sin) to be purified of the consequences of sin to restore disrupted relationships.

This all sounds strange to you because the Reformers completely removed this teaching with the new invention of “imputed grace” that covers over sin. NO! We are CLEANSED UTTERLY of sin through a sanctification process and made holy and as innocent as a child. Most Protestants have no concept of “holiness” because of the defective sanctification model of the reformers - who invented it out of thin air (Actually it was an old heresy plagiarized from). Penance helps us become holy again after our sins are forgiven by letting us suffer to restore all our damaged relationships - God, fellow man, ourselves (hardest to forgive perhaps) and the Church.

This does not deny the power of Christ - in fact it draws on it. But the truth is that forgivness of sins can remove the guilt of sin but there is no guarantee that it also always removes all these consequences - God wants us to take responsibility for our mistakes. Suffering is what happens when we disobey God and forgivness does not remove suffering and the pain of our bad choices in most cases.

Penance helps a LOT.

Without penance many people get a lackadaisical attitude toward God. God’s forgivness is just presumed and anticipated and one is not compelled by any sense of personal consequence from sinning - since one can “just seek forgivness - again and again and again” etc. Penance self imposes a discipline and a personal cost for sinning that helps to repair and detour repeating sin.

That’s pointless, as their fate is sealed in hell, by command of your loving God.
I thought you did not believe in God???

Regardless whether you do or not (though I know you do)…

God is Love and it is only when men reject God that they go to Hell. The reason they go has nothing to do with God but is entirely their choice. God has made us all aware of Himself and you choose… Heaven or Hell.

The onus is on you to prove the existence of your God, not on I, to prove his non-existence.

You believe by faith and not by evidence.

You also suggest that if something is not known, it must have a supernatural explanation.
God has proved his existence to the believer through giving us the gift of faith. A believer can embrace his faith and a non-believer will be perplexed at how many a good a believer will go to his death rather than give up that faith or give his whole life up on a thing the none believer can’t see. The unbeliever embraces his own thoughts and opinions in a similar way a believer embraces his faith.

Where is the evidence that your faith in yourself is any better than holding to one’s own vanity?

No right minded Christian will suggest that things that are unknown are objectively supernatural. That is, while we can rightfully assume that intangible phenomena related to the nature of matter are all around us (momentum, acceleration, inertia, gravity) these are just effects of nature and its laws. What we know in faith though is that all these things are mere mechanisms that obey a divine law and will.
