SPLIT: Recitation of Gospel versicles during Lent

My first time…not sure how to do this…Question: During Lent, when reciting (not singing) the gospel acclamation: it it proper to recite the versicle without any acclamation before and after it?

I used to think it was illicit to recite the Gospel Acclamation because the GIRM said “If not sung, the acclamation is omitted.”

However, now the GIRM says “if not sung, it may be omitted” so I am confused!
