When a couple is married in a non-Christian religion, then one converts to Catholicism, and the other doesn’t, what is the name for the ceremony that’s used to validate their marriage?

Talk with your pastor about it. He can give you the guidence you need. :tiphat:

God Bless!

Are you referring to the Catholic priest as a pastor? I’ve never heard that before.

In most cases there is no need to convalidate the marriage. The top two reasons are:
  • One (or both) of the parties was baptized as a Catholic at some point prior to the wedding, and the wedding did not take place in the Catholic Church.
  • One (or both) of the parties was divorced, and needs to obtain a decree of nullity (an “annulment”) from a Catholic tribunal.
In these cases, the Catholic Church does not recognize the marriage as valid.

The marriage of two non-Catholics (whether Christian or non-Christian), each of whom has no living ex-spouses, is recognized as valid by the Catholic Church regardless of where the ceremony was performed (i.e., civil ceremony, non-Catholic ceremony, etc.).

The pastor is the priest in charge of a Catholic parish. It’s a common term in my experience.

Dawn,

I posted an answer to some of your questions in the thread Julieanne had posted (I can’t get my browser to copy and paste the link, sorry)

My husband and I had our marriage blessed through the Rite of Convalidation about 2 weeks ago. If you have any questions, I’d be happy to help!

Peace be with you,
Jamie
