SPLIT: Standing throughtout Mass

It is unrealistic to expect families with small children to stand for an hour plus. The children will get bored, restless, etc. Ditto for the elderly or those with physical limitations.

Some of these people will end up NOT going to mass!

Ever been to the EF? They regularly go BEYOND an hour. Even a properly done NO will go to about an hour and a half.

I guess it’s unrealistic to expect Catholics to care more about their faith than comfort.

I didn’t say that all would not go or that even most would not go. I said that SOME might not go.

And don’t judge others until you’ve walked in their shoes. Try being a young mother holding and infant in your arms for an entire hour while trying to keep another offspring from causing a disruption or being well into your golden years where you have a hard time walking and see what it is like having to stand for 60+ minutes.

Unless you experienced these things, you DON’T know with COMPLETE certainty how you would act in similar circumstances.

Actually, I do know how I would act. I would continue attending Mass.

It’s higher and greater than me. I have the obligation to attend Mass. Hell is a lot more painful than holding a child.

Also, do note that very small/young children do not need to attend Mass when they are very young. So, worst case scenario, one parent stays at home with the very little kids, and attends Mass once the other gets home.

Really? My 60 year old grandfather can barely walk. If you’re expecting him to stand for 60 minutes, it isn’t going to happen. It physically is not possible. Put him in that situation, and he’ll try, like many people, as a point of pride, but he wouldn’t be able to do it.

I don’t think you’re grasping how difficult standing in one spot for 60+ minutes is. I have a hard time doing it, and I’m an 18 year old who plays football.

Then the “Catholics” literally sitting in the pews ought to be courteous and give the man a seat, and I would expect the same. If not, after that first week I’d realize what time I would need to arrive at the church in order to sit down.

There should be no need for this situation to exist, though. It can easily be avoided, as has been pointed out with more Masses (which sometimes requires the use of EMHCs). For a lot of older people, especially of grandfather’s generation, asking for a seat is a humiliation. There isn’t a need to put anyone in this situation week after week.
