There would have to be a lack of a sacred place, e.g. parish church or chapel or ease, or of another Mass centre, or anywhere Mass is celebrated rather than the lack of a parish.
No, just lack of a Mass or Liturgy. Because it can be celebrated anywhere, like a field or a stadium.

You misunderstood my post. I was saying that the lack of a parish wouldn’t be sufficient. What is necessary, as you have indicated in a certain way, is that there has to a lack of a place to go, which would infer no Eucharistic celebration.

The choice of a non-sacred place cannot just randomly happen anyway. Permission to celebrate outside a sacred place is required. On holy days of obligation this permission is not lightly given.

Not from where I come from. Masses are regularly celebrated at malls.

Also note that in events of huge celebrations, Masses may be cancelled at the parishes and have everyone come to the huge celebration. Like 2-3 years ago it was the 100 years I think of the Archdiocese of Vancouver. There were morning Masses, but afternoon Masses were cancelled and there was one huge Mass at the stadium. So if one didn’t have a chance to go in the morning, then in the afternoon the only chance was in the stadium.

Please bear in mind that the first Mass was celebrated in a rented private dining room. So much for requiring a “sacred space.”
Jesus told us that wherever two or three are gathered in his name, he is in their midst. Thus the location of a celebration of the liturgy is hallowed by the gathering of the faithful.

I’ve been to church picnics where Mass was held on the grounds of church outside of it then after Mass was done, then there was food and activities for all. As a child, a few times a parishioner donated their land with a lake on it for the Mass, the picnic and after Mass activities which included swimming. I am sure the local bishop had to approve those locations too for Mass. I have been to a Papal Mass years ago, and it was held at a stadium that held 80,000 people approximately.

I would say if the diocesan bishop approved it, then no issues where Mass is held as long there are the basic things available for the celebration of Mass. I even remember reading that Catholics in Ireland when the Penal Laws were in effect had to be careful when practicing their faith including Mass, and often Mass was held in a variety of place.

The first Mass was celebrated in a rented private dining room. However, it is normative for Mass to be celebrated in sacred spaces. This is not my take on the matter but the Church’s own rules. Just as we cannot celebrate Mass in dining rooms nowadays we cannot celebrate the Mass in the same form as the Last Supper.

The Church does from time to time give permission to celebrate Mass outside sacred places such as a parish church. She normally does this when there is a perceived need to be met.

Obviously, when the Pope makes an apostolic journey to another country Papal Masses are often celebrated in non-sacred places to accommodate the huge number of people who want to attend.

Actually, Jesus was “stemming off” of the Passover ritual at the last supper. The passover supper was supposed to happen in the dining room. That was the “sacred space” designated for the passover meal, and right now, the “sacred space” designated for the celebration of Mass is a parish, chapel, or oratory.

Well, at the time of the Last Supper there wasn’t exactly the huge well-established Church with its plethora of readily-available church and cathedral buildings available in which to accommodate large congregations

And if two or three gathering in Jesus’ name in just any ol’ place is fine for liturgical purposes then why bother attending church with the larger community or worshippers at all - ever?

But aren’t they celebrated in chapels in the malls?
Some malls have provided space to become chapels. Some have chapels that simply cannot hold the number of people and thus moved out to a bigger space that isn’t a chapel. Some use large empty halls in a mall. Some even use the middle part where concerts and activities are held. Its a mix of things. The episcopal conference wants to reach out to people this way, and mall owners comply because it helps put people in their commercial space.

A drawback to this is distraction. Members of the congregation can be easily distracted by passers-by and ambient sounds/noise in the mall. This is one reason I avoid (if i can) Mass celebrated in such places. Moreover, one cannot stay a while after Mass for adoration.

One thing that confounds me is why Ayala never spent to upgrade the chapel at Greenbelt. The mall around it has changed. Actually, everything around it has changed, but the chapel remains the same. He could have upgraded the chapel to a bigger one and put air conditioning in it.

Wow, where did they build this? I didn’t visit Megamall the last 2 times I came home for a visit. I know they used to have that small chapel which they outgrew pretty quick and had to celebrate at the 5th level hallway for a while.
