SPLIT: Where may Mass be celebrated:

Before my former Parish was built the mass was celebrated in my (public) Catholic school gym. It was a relatively new area and I think the nearest Parishes were getting overburdened, so we had Mass in the gym on Sundays until the church was done.

Actually, we would also have Mass in the gym sometimes during the week at the monthly school Mass or Liturgy of the Word.
 
Canon Law:

THE TIME AND PLACE OF THE CELEBRATION OF THE EUCHARIST

Can. 931 The celebration and distribution of the Eucharist can be done at any day and hour except those which the liturgical norms exclude.

Can. 932 §1. The eucharistic celebration is to be carried out in a sacred place unless in a particular case necessity requires otherwise; in such a case the celebration must be done in a decent place.

§2. The eucharistic sacrifice must be carried out on a dedicated or blessed altar; outside a sacred place a suitable table can be used, always with a cloth and a corporal.

Can. 933 For a just cause and with the express permission of the local ordinary, a priest is permitted to celebrate the Eucharist in the place of worship of some Church or ecclesial community which does not have full communion with the Catholic Church so long as there is no scandal.

I worship at The National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother (The Grotto) Portland, Oregon. thegrotto.org/ This shrine is in care of the Order of Friar Servants of Mary.
Normally Mass is celebrated in the Chapel of Mary. However during the summer months it is also celebrated outdoors in front of the Grotto area. This is allowed because it is a dedicated/blessed alter that is in place there. However, weddings, funerals, etc. are not allowed outside, only in the main chapel.

Wow, where did they build this? I didn’t visit Megamall the last 2 times I came home for a visit. I know they used to have that small chapel which they outgrew pretty quick and had to celebrate at the 5th level hallway for a while.

When SM MegaMall was renovated a couple of years ago, a huge part of the “quiet” 5th level was rebuilt into a huge chapel. The chapel holds Masses twice daily, and 7 Masses on Sundays. It’s already soundproofed to keep the Mall noise from getting in.

Interesting. Did Henry Sy funded the chapel? I wonder how St. Francis parish in Mandaluyong feels about this? Where I used to live in QC there is a small mall that doesn’t have a lot of shops. The third floor was made into a makeshift chapel for weekly Sunday Mass. There are two nearby parishes but of course given the state of our country (its very, very hot!) people prefer to go to the one thats air conditioned (the mall). The nearby parishes weren’t happy about it (I’m curious where they got the priest though) but the group that stages the weekly Mass did promise to share the collection with the parish who has jurisdiction where the mall is.

Thats actually even a bit on the plain side when it comes to Philippine parishes.

I believe Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sy funded the construction. Mrs. Molly Sy supervised the project until it’s completion. AFAIK, the mall provides financial supports for the chapel staff and ministries; the proceeds from the collections are distributed to poor parishes around the country.

As for St. Francis Parish, I don’t think they would have anything to say.
