Or is this only one person’s opinion? Do any Protestants believe that Catholics deny the Eucharist to homosexuals?

I suppose I should look at the other thread.

If someone presents themselves at Holy Communion and informs the priest that they are practicing fornicators, the priest is obligated to deny them communion. But who would do that? The priest doesn’t know what we have been doing. The priest doesn’t know if we have been to confession. The presumption is always that the person is properly disposed. It is the communicant’s responsibility to examine his own soul. But if anyone wants to receive communion in a state of mortal sin, who would know?

The problem is that those in mortal sin are not benefitted by receiving holy communion unworthily. The Scriptures and church law are clear about this. This is probably what non-Catholics are failing to appreciate. The very idea that this teaching means the Church is denying the means of salvation is ludicrous. The instruction, which any practicing homosexual is free to ignore is in no fashion discriminatory. I would and I think I have refrained from receiving communion myself until I could get to confession for this very reason. I know I have been afraid I wouldn’t make it in to confession before Mass and I knew I shouldn’t receive. Mortal sin plus sacrilege do not equal anything I want. There are no exceptions for the mortal sin of homosexual unchastity. How could anyone think there should be some special dispensation for ANY particular mortal sin?

As for people tempted to unchaste homosexuality, that is also treated the same as for those tempted to heterosexual unchastity. So…I know the Church has the same standards for those inclined to homosexuality as for those inclined to heterosexuality as for those inclined to murder as for those inclined to any kind of serious sin. The inclination, if resisted by God’s grace is meritorious, and certainly such faithful Catholics are warmly invited to receive Holy Communion.

Roman Catholics (to their credit) counsel those who are in mortal sin to not approach the altar rail for holy communion, or to simply seek a blessing in lieu of the eucharistic elements. This would and does include both homosexuals and heterosexuals who are living in mortal sin, either by being promiscuous or by living in irregular marriages, or by living in a domestic state with someone one is not married to.

In practice, I doubt that the RCC has a list of open sinners that is consulted at each mass. The RCC does advise who is able to come to communion and who is not. It is up to the communicant to decide whether or not he/she should communicate.

I am Episcopalian, and at RC masses, which I rarely attend, I do not approach, out of respect for the wishes of the RCC. I could easily approach and receive and who would know, but God does know, and I don’t like being sneaky when it comes to the Almighty.

Mortal sin is not limited to homosexuals. Hetrosexuals cannot use birth control. It is a mortal sin. We are obligated to confess it with the understanding we will not (as in NEVER) use artificial birth control again. If you cannot make that promise, your sin is not absolved, and you do not approach the altar rail. Same thing with homosexuals.

because as the thread which introduced this topic proves, people who make that charge are ignorant both of Catholic teaching on the nature of the Eucharist, as well as homosexuality, and take pride in parading that ignorance.

Is it just ignorance, or is it something far worse?
A darkened intellect might be involved, as well…We all know what can cause that.

We should be more precise when differentiating between people who have a homosexual tendency and strive to remain chaste, and those who dont. (That word "gay" makes me sick!) Our enemies are only too ready to pounce on any "misunderstanding" to claim that were condemning ALL people who suffer from SSA, rather than the ACTS of some SSA sufferers. The Church`s teaching: “Love the sinner, but hate the sin.” is conveniently ignored.

I dont feel the original poster is truely EO…I could be wrong but the ideas seemed SDAish… It was such a strang way of arguing… very dark, not intending to convert or seek the truth only to create confusion.

A very respectful, charitable, Christian attitude that is much-appreciated…you’re a class-act, Usbek. 🙂

I cannot find the original thread. I can only assume that it has met it’s timely demise. Something bad must have happen while I was having some hot chocolate as the entire thread has disappeared.

I will say a prayer over it.

N2,
I have never heard of the CC denying communion in this way. It is not being homosexual that is a sin, anymore than being heterosexual is a sin. Acting on one’s sexual orientation outside of marriage is a sin.
We all sin. Lutherans are expected to confess their sins and receive absolution prior to receiving the Eucharist. I expect it is the same with Catholics.

Jon

Quite right.

There are, however, circumstances for denying the Eucharist to someone in a state of unrepentant mortal sin.

FMI, what is the Lutheran take on possible denial of communion? I don’t recall any discussion of this from my Lutheran days. What was hammered into us in catechism was not to take communion if you approached it in an unworthy manner, i.e. were not properly disposed to receive it with humility and a penitant heart.

Thanks Ricko. It’s all good. 🙂
Did you enjoy your hot chocolate? 🙂

Well, the pork chops were great and RCIA was informative. But, I come back and guess what thread I find. I can’t believe it…not again.

But no green font. or large sizes.

I cannot thank the moderators enough for dealing with that thread as they did.

I wonder if there is a ‘cyberspace’ equivalent of a large trashcan. . .if so, that is how I picture that thread disappearing into. . .

Filed in the ‘circular’ file. . .🙂

I say go check out the casserole thread. Yum.

It’s tuna casserole for me tomorrow (Friday you know). Tuna is the ONLY fish that I can eat provided it is covered by cream of celery soup, noodles, peas, and buttered bread crumbs, especially if after it comes bubbling out of the oven one can put on some fresh pepper from pepper mill and a dash of Mrs. Dash!

Especially if I make some fresh buttermilk biscuits to go alongside. . .

You are so wicked!

That tuna casserole sounds good. I also have a fish pie recipe I am thinking of making for Ash Wednesday. 👍

Justin, you all ready for the Lenten season?
We are doing our retreat with our catechumen on Sat. Then into the “enlightenment and purification” time of Lent.

Gonna be a different RCIA experience for all of us, including the team. Since this man is Jewish he will be baptized at the Easter Vigil, so we will be doing the Scrutinies for the last three Sunday’s of Lent.

I don’t even know what to do. My first Lent and no one has given us any instruction on what to do or how to plan. Would you enlighten me a little?
