The bishop of Spokane affirmed the right to life in his statement, saying that “efforts to expand access to abortion” are “evil.” He continued, “Children are a gift from God, no matter the circumstances of their conception. They not only have a right to life, but we as a society have a moral obligation to protect them from harm.”

Good to see a bishop with a spine and do what all bishops should have been doing all along. It’s also nice to see that Spokane got quite a nice upgrade from their previous bishop who did almost the exact opposite of this in a way. Quite the change in philosophy, but a welcome one.

A stand I agree with, but two points of order:

1. “should not receive” and “will not be given” the eucharist are two different things, and he said the former, not the later…“should not receive” leaves the action up to the wayward Catholic, where “will not be given” gives definitive action to pastors…so it may not be as strong a stand as it appears.
2. The article unfairly compares the decision of the Spokane Bishop with the NY Archbishop…its not anyone’s call outside of the Archdiocese of New York or outside the Diocese of Spokane to make or judge decisions made by those occupying the chair.
