I am thinking about moving to Spokane, WA. I am trying to find a good orthodox, conservative catholic church. Does anyone have any recommendations? Is Spokane a good place to live?
These are groups that focus on the traditional Latin Mass. The abbreviations are from French, but the FSSP is the Priestly Society of St. Peter, and the SSPX is the Society of St. Pius X. Please be aware that the FSSP is a legitimate group in communion with the Catholic Church that is fully permitted to offer the sacraments, while the SSPX is a breakaway sect whose leader was excommunicated by John Paul II, is not in communion with the Church, and is forbidden to offer the sacraments or minister to the faithful. People also sometimes call the SSPX the “FSSPX,” making it even easier to confuse them with the FSSP. You can just remember to avoid the X – if you are a faithful Catholic, you should “X them off of your list,” as it were.sorry, what does FSSP or SSPX mean? Thanks!

Not silly, simply ill-informed. The above that you quote doesn’t apply to the SSPX’s actions in the Archbishop’s consecration of bishops (which is clearly schismtic, in canon law), it applies to one particular person who attended the SSPX.Cardinal Ratzinger on the SSPX
From the examination of the case… it did not result that the facts referred to in the above-mentioned decree, are formal schismatic acts in the strict sense, as they do not constitute the offense of schism; and therefore the Congregation holds that the decree of May 1, 1991, lacks foundation and hence validity." (June 28, 1993) Cardinal Ratzinger
So, they’re not necessarily schismatic. Silly me!
God Bless. I hope you find yourself a great Parish…
Another suggestion, would be to attend the Cathedral!

*Eccesia Dei, *promulgated by Pope John Paul II, clearly warns the laity against association with the Society, as it could lead to them “imbibing” a schismatic attitude.
The Society itself may not be in FORMAL schism, but the warning still stands. Also, their priests possess no faculties, so every sacramental act they undertake is illicit.
:byzsoc:Are you looking for a diocesan parish or would you attend a parish that is not operating with the permission and does not have the blessing of the Roman Catholic bishop of the Spokane diocese? Your answer to this would assist in directing your search.I am thinking about moving to Spokane, WA. I am trying to find a good orthodox, conservative catholic church. Actually, that retreat center was where my wife and I did our pre-marriage retreat. It’s always nice to see Nuns in full habit.. . . A couple of years ago a small group of the CMRI Nuns were accepted back into the church and are assiting the local Bishop at the Retreat Center. They are known as the Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Church. They have appeared on EWTN to tell their story of re-conversion. Its a very heart-warming story.
The last name is spelled ‘Schuckhardt’-but you were pretty close! And to add to some very interesting statements; I do believe that there is a weekly EF Mass at St. Charles Borromeao(sp?) in spokane. I used to live about 50 miles north of there back in the 70’s - 80’s.
The CMRI that was referred to earlier used to be known as the “Shukarite’s”. Seems a “bishop” Shukar used to head up the group. He later seems to have dropped out of sight. The Nuns from the CMRI are really great Nuns. Unfortunately they are Sedevacantists. Did you sister explain why? I do not have any children but that concerns me. Is there any specific reason why?my sister lives in seattle and says if you have children Spokane is not a great place to live. my husband and i are thinking about moving to washington, colorado or alaska. sooooo she gave me a few a suggestions and olympia is highly recommended. she said she is even thinking about moving there too after her daughter and son are out of school and in college. she said the schools and churches are wonderful as well as the people.
The whole East side is tough on kids. I grew up on the east side; limited stuff to do. Olympia really is lovely.she said i think high crime rate and party town…of course we talked about other cities…so i could be getting cities mixed up and i apologize in advance if i am. but im 90% sure this is correct information. she said olympia wa is better for jobs, schools etc.
Pullman is a college town about 70 miles south of Spokane and it is the epitome of a college town since the student body comprises a large, transient portion of the population. Spokane on the other hand has only 2 small private universities and I have not heard anyone call it a college town. Equally, people who live in Spokane consider it a good place to raise kids. There is definitely an “east-side” versus “west-side” bias in the state since the majority of the population lives on the west side around the Puget Sound. The west side tends to vote more progressively and tends to support democrats whereas the east side tends to go republican. Some east siders seem to have an inferiority complex but they tend not to realize it as such.Spokane is a college town, they always have their problems, plus they have nasty winters. Stay west of the mtns. its much nicer here.
