I have lived many years on both sides of the Cascades and I would prefer eastside above westside. Spokane is NOT a bad city. You at least have the choice of NO or EF Masses. Olympia is a very eco-liberal city. Its the state capitol. Government is all over the place and Liberal. Both Evergreen State college and St. Martins are very liberal edu’s.

So if you bag is liberalism, then by all means move to Olympia.

And when it comes to employment; not much difference between the two. Our Lewis county is running just under 15%. Olympia is a little better. And Spokane is near the same as Oly.

Weather; depends on your likes. Want rain, lots of it? Move to the west. Like snow and cold weather; move to eastside.

Thats it in a nutshell.

she said i think high crime rate and party town…of course we talked about other cities…so i could be getting cities mixed up and i apologize in advance if i am. but im 90% sure this is correct information. she said olympia wa is better for jobs, schools etc.

I wouldn’t really consider Spokane a “party town,” but the crime there is a concern. I felt safer in midtown Manhattan at night than I do in downtown Spokane at night. Spokane itself does have more than its fair share of urban problems. However, some of the areas in the metro area aren’t too bad. Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene, Idaho are pretty good, if you can afford to live there, and are within easy driving distance of Spokane for work.

Seems not too many long time residents of Eastern WA or Spokane posting regarding Spokane itself. But one parish not mentioned is SS Cyril and Methodius Byzantine Catholic Parish. It is a small Byzantine Catholic parish that has been in Spokane a little over 30 years. Residents of Spokane and E. WA don’t have an inferiority complex. They are just very normal, real people and love where they live. (They really don’t want to live on the west side–maybe visit, but hurry back home). It is a great area for families and has strong family values. Just some other thoughts to consider

The city offers family fun all year with a number of civic events and public events such as Hoopfest, Bloomsday, Neighbor Days, First Night…and on and on… As far as churches go, there are many fine parishes throughout the region. You can find both the OF and EF every weekend. The Cathedral parish is very orthodox and edifying. There is a thriving sedevacantist population in Spokane, so do steer away from Mt. St. Michael’s and OL of Guadalupe parishes as they are not in communion with Rome. I have lived here all my life, feel free to message me for more info if interested.

I have lived in Spokane for 25 years and we raised our two children here. Spokane is a great place to raise a family. We attend the Cathedral which has a beautiful mass at 11:00 with a full choir and all the “smells and bells”. The cost of living is really reasonable here as well and we have a very active arts community including a symphony. You should make a visit and check us out.

Those parishes wouldn’t be “thriving” if the diocese was more, how shall I put it, “tradition” friendly. And what, may I ask, is being done to reclaim these souls?

The original question was about moving to Spokane. There are long and complicated reasons why people choose to participate in churches which are not obedient to Rome and this thread is not the place for that. Please do not make assumptions that the Spokane Diocese is not welcoming, the leadership has worked very closely with the Sisters of Mary Mother of the Church to help them come into communion with the Catholic church for example.

Keep in mind, if you have or are planning to have children, that WA is not home school friendly. This was one reason why we were looking at the ID side of the border. WA has no state tax (which is important to some)- BUT ID is more homeschool friendly. If I recall correctly WA law states you have to be a certified teacher to homeschool or some such nonsense…

We have a thriving homeschool community here in Spokane. It is not that difficult to meet the requirements. Our neighbors across the street are homeschooling their 11 children.

I so hope my post is not too late for this subject. I was a member of this Schuchardt cult for 18 years, and pray NO ONE joins them. It was a group where Schuchardt sexually abused the young seminarians, Fr Denis knew about it, many boarders were sexually abused—families were truly ripped apart, including mine.
Schuchardt ran away in 84 and started a new group in Seattle, who are still there. The man himself died a few years ago. Spokane is NOT the place to settle.
