Hello
I am a Catholic born and bred and have been practising for 60 years +. My grandson is soon to be confirmed and I assumed that a male sponsor was required as happened when my children were confirmed. My son says the teacher has made no mention of this. Is it not now required
Thank you

the sponsor may be male or female, must be at least age 16, fully initiated, living in harmony with Catholic practice and moral teaching, including Church laws on marriage, and not otherwise barred from being a sponsor, and may not be the parent of the candidate, should be chosen by the candidate, and willing to serve in this capacity.

This usually means attending at least one confirmation preparation session with the candidate, and of course being there for the actual rite of Confirmation.

Yes it is still required in Canon Law. The Sponsor should be one of the Godparents from Baptism who have remained good and faithful Catholics involved in the childs spritual life.

Can. 892 Insofar as possible, there is to be a sponsor for the person to be confirmed; the sponsor is to take care that the confirmed person behaves as a true witness of Christ and faithfully fulfills the obligations inherent in this sacrament.

Can. 893 §1. To perform the function of sponsor, a person must fulfill the conditions mentioned in can. 874.

§2. It is desirable to choose as sponsor the one who undertook the same function in baptism.

It is not mandatory to have one of the god parents present it is desirable. Also it does not state anywhere that the sponsor has to be male for a boy or female for a girl.

It is usual, but not required, for a male to sponsor a male, and a female to sponsor a female.

I had a Priest for a Confirmation Sponsor, and I am a woman. Is this allowed in Canon Law? Nobody seemed to raise any objections at the time.

Yes it is allowed 😃 .

I did not say that it MUST be one of the Baptismal Sponsors. I also did not mention anything about the gender of the Sponsor.

Yes of course Canon Law does not specify the gender of the Confirmation Sponsor. It does not specify the gender of the Baptismal Sponsor or Godparent when there is only one. The only time Canon Law specifies gender is when there are two Godparents. They must be of opposite gender. You cannot have two Godfathers or two Godmothers.
