Hi

My emphasis is that Islam spread peacefully in many parts of the world due to its simple and rational teachings which develop physical, moral and spiritual faculties of a people. This is the main power of this great religion that attracts everybody, the rulers as also the ruled. From Muhammad onward this has been the phenomenon, in my opinion.

Islam in the Philippines

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam_in_the_Philippines

Islam is one of the oldest organized religions to be established in the Philippines. Islam reached the islands in the 14th century with the arrival of Indian, Malay and Javanese merchants, and Arab missionaries from various sultanates in the Malay Archipelago, although the spread of Islam in the Philippines is due to the strength of Muslim India.

India brought Islam to Southeast Asia, specifically Malaysia and Indonesia, and in turn the latter two brought Islam to the Philippines. Muslims form 5% of the Philippine population, while the rest of the general population are mostly Roman Catholic (84%) and Protestant (8%).

In 1380, Karim ul’ Makhdum, the first Islamic missionary to reach the Sulu Archipelago and Jolo, brought Islam to what is now the Philippines. The Sheik Karimal Makdum Mosque was the first mosque established in the Philippines on Simunul. Subsequent visits by Arab Muslim missionaries from the now Islamicized Malaysia and Indonesia, helped strengthen the Islamic faith in the Philippines, mostly in the south but as far north as Manila.

Vast sultanates were established, comprised of the Sultanate of Maguindanao and the Sultanate of Sulu. Since the first people who established themselves as sultans in various parts of the Malay Archipelago—Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines—were usually of Arab descent, most people of royal lineage claim Arab descent, some going as far as claiming descent from the Prophet Muhammad himself.

The periods following the demise of the Prophet Muhammad - led to the expansion of Islam to Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia. In Southeast Asia, Islam was promulgated by three methods: by Muslim traders in the course of peaceful trade; by preachers and holy men who set out from India and Arabia specifically to convert idolaters and animist and increase the knowledge of the faithful; and by war waged against heathen states.

Trading served as a strong factors in spreading Islam in Southeast Asia, with Muslim merchants interested not only in the commercial aspects of life, but in the spiritual as well, providing Islamic knowledge to the uniformed through religious missions.

It was in North Sumatra that the trade route from India and the west reached the archipelago, and Islam first obtained a firm footing in Southeast Asia. Malacca , the main trading center of the area in the 15th century, became the great stronghold of the faith, from where it spread out. In the 10th century, Islam’s influence intensified and reached as far as ancient Malaysia. This in turn would affect its growth in what would become The Philippines.

The strength of the Sulu sultanate in the early 14th was enhanced by Malay leaders who helped the natives in political, economic, and religious developments. Among others, Rajah Baguinda, a Sumatrans prince, came to the Philippines in 1390 with a group of men, all learned in Islam. They settled in Buwansa, which became the first capital of the sultanate of Sulu, and Abubakhar his son-in-law became the first sultan.

The early missionaries who came to the Philippines were guided by Islamic principles of no religious compulsion, thus the gradual and liberal promulgation of Islam. Known as Mukhdumin, these missionaries did not mean to conquer the territories or exploit its inhabitants but to teach, and guide people to the right path.

Paramount among them was Rajah Baguinda, followed by h
is son-in-law Sharieful Hashim, who served as the first sultan of Sulu. Afterestablishing a community and assuming leadership doctrines on tawhid(Monotheism) to eradicate polytheism, animism and idolatry.

With the coming of the Spaniards and the Americans, the Bangsa Islam declined. Both colonial powers incorporated the independent Bangsa Islam into the Philippines state, reducing the power of the sultan, especially during the American regime.

The Muslim courageously resisted the Spanish conquistadors, but it cost them in terms of socioeconomic development, which remained almost at zero level because of the constant wars. While the natives of the Visayas and Luzon easily succumbed to the Spaniards, the Muslim continued to defend their Bangsa, tau, iban, agama (Nation, People, and Religion).

Spain resorted to massive propaganda to win the war, one weapon of which was religious nationalism. Its religious introduced Christianity as the only true religion , with Islam therefore “a false religion”. This outraged the Muslim, who became more determined to fight, thus the resistance in the name of jihad (holy war) with the battle cry: Kamatay sampay kamaharhikaan (Death until victory is Achieved).

Another type of propaganda the Spaniards used was name-calling. Instead of calling the Islamic people of Mindanao Muslims, they named them Moros, with negative connotations of being pirates, juramentados, repulsive, sinister, and the like.
Incredibly, Muslims in the Philippines intermittently apply the term Moro as the rallying point for unification of the different linguistic communities that profess Islam.

The idea is to consolidate those different tribes into one body or nation that would formulate a common stand against any force that tried to subjugate and exploit their country, people, and natural resources.

i’m not sure islam is spreading in the philippines. the country has been and still is dominantly catholic. peacefully? we hear of recent bombings and acts of terrorism in the south and even in metro manila perpetrated by fanatical muslims. in mindanao where there is concentration of muslims, one can not convert to christianity w/o being hunted down and killed and this is true in other countries where islam religion dominates. in most democratic countries muslims have freedom to worship in their faith, but none is offered to christians in muslim countries. is this what muslim called charity?
God bless.

Islam isn’t spreading in the Philippines but, sadly, moral relativism is! My wife is Filipina and we are shocked and saddened each time we go back to the Phils and see how common cohabitation is, how prevalent pre-marital sex and out-of-wedlock pregnancy is, how ACCEPTING of the homosexual lifestyle Filipinos have become, and how everyone contracepts.

The Philippines in many ways is having more of a moral crisis than we are except for the abortion issue. Thankfully they are still a pro-life country.

I also notice protestantism spreading more each time we go there, especially with the wacky Iglesia Ni Cristo sect. Mormons and JW’s are all over the place, too.

i would not say your observation is wrong, but have you looked at the other side as well? how the faithful have multiplied by the grace of God, how they feed the poor, visit those in prison, cared for the sick, etc? i’m confident that the good people outnumbered the fallen ones.🙂
God bless.

Here’s what I’ve noticed, and correct me if I’m wrong: I’ve noticed that in majority-Catholic Philippines, the major security threat comes from Islamic terrorist groups like Abu Sayyaf and MILF, while in majority-Islamic Indonesia, they’re not worried about Catholic terrorists. Instead, they’re invading and massacring tiny Catholic East Timor.

Am I missing something here? Getting my facts wrong? Because it seems to me you’ve chosen a region of the world where Islamic-affiliated groups cause a lot of bloodshed, whether they’re in the majority or minority.

God bless! I know you don’t celebrate Christmas, but Merry Christmas anyways!! 👍

And who do you think brought relativism, protestantism, cohabitation, premarital sex and homosexual lifestyle there?

I really thought you were describing the entire, good old US of A!😛

You know, Filipinos are capable of sin without American brainwashing. Yes, a lot of our garbage is sold there. No doubt. There is hip hop, there are violent video games all over the place there, and the morality has become very very lax.

But I think it’s a cop-out to blame the Americans for everything. The third world is capable of great sin as well and if a culture had strong Catholic values it would resist such relativism and nonsense. Neither Americans nor most other countries in the world are, by and large, good Catholic countries.

There are MANY Filipinos that are devout, serious, caring, religious Catholics. I know many of them. But I have to say that, in reply to you and the other poster before you, there are more Filipinos that I’ve seen who live contracepting, having premarital sex, condoning the gay lifestyle, and playing the violent/inappropriate video games, etc. than those who don’t.

Just turn on Filipino TV…it’s filthy! The gameshows have homosexuals right and left, the commercials are often skanty and the shows treat sex just like Americans view it.

I think many of us Catholics like to think that America is apostate and heinous religiously while over in the third world they are holy, devout, traditional Catholics. I think that’s bull and shows naivete. I’ve been to the Philippines A LOT and I keep up with what goes on there a lot as well. My wife’s own family and her family’s friends and so many people I observed there are more like typical American families morally-speaking than one would think.

I can’t count the times I walked into a store in Manila or Baguio and heard “F-you!” in the lyrics of hip hop songs being played IN THE MALL! Girls walk around skantily clad, I hear boys cussing away, there are strip joins in Manila, and you can see right and left unmarried folks with babies, etc.

I’m not being prejudiced against Filipinos, I’m making the point that moral relativism, sexual sins, and turning a blind eye to Church teaching is in the third world more than we pie in the sky dreaming Americans would like to think.

Now that being said, there are TONS of priests coming out of the Philippines. There are seminaries there PACKED with priests and students studying to be priests. I think there are WAY MORE serious Catholics in the Philippines than in the U.S. for sure. There is great devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help and the rosary is indeed prayed there.

But the Church is not doing enough there to fight cohabitation (trust me, it’s rampant), out of wedlock births, promiscuity, homosexuality, contraception, etc. America and Europe are not the only parts of the world in trouble.

OF COURSE I’ve looked at the positive side, friend. My wife is a Pinay and I’ve been to this wonderful country many times. They have a wonderful faith and rich Catholic tradition there. They have many ministries and much devotion to the Church in the Phils. But I’m just pointing out the moral crisis there. It’s sad to see such a deeply religious country fall victim to cohabitation, homosexuality, and promiscuity. I won’t give details out of respect but trust me, my wife (who IS Filipina from Baguio, Philippines) has been constantly heart-broken for 10 years now watching family members (both immediate and extended) cohabitate, have kids out of wedlock, or get married because they “had to” and contracept, on and on. The TV shows have gay characters, there are constant gay pride parades there (that are generally accepted as cute and funny by the public), and AIDS crisis, prostitution in Manila is out of control, and I’ve never seen so many husbands leaving their wives in my life!? There is no such thing as divorce in the Philippines due to the Church’s interventions so the people just leave one another and move in with a new “spouse” and so forth. There is A LOT of this stuff going on there…

I’m a member of this club also, she’s a Tagaog from Manila, I must say if my wife’s family is an example none of this is new. Fully half the woman I know are either single mothers or their father or husband had affairs which became public knowledge. From an aunt who was a single mother in the 70s and an uncle who abandoned his family and since there is no divorce as far as I can tell he can be picked up for bigamy should he return to the pinas she he married again in America after getting amnesty for immigration in the 80s. To her father who devoutly attended church yet when he was killed shortly after Marcos was forced out the kabit showed up to collect the 25% of the estate for her half brothers and sisters. Turns out after church he used the graft picked up as a high level government employee to keep a second family.

While the locals may joke about the Muslims and their multiple wives atleast the Muslims are more honest then Christian Philippines in this area. The local concept of “the legal wife” used to distinguish the first wive from the subsequent girlfriends, often given wife status if daddy supports the children, brings sadness when you think about it. I have often wondered that if the state allowed divorce for people besides those who married Muslim men under Sharia law would the out of wedlock births drop as many men would leave their first family altogether instead of keeping secret or don’t ask, don’t tell second families on the side.

The main moral difference I can see is the Americans are more open and willing to talk about our bad side. The single American mother is more likely a teenager while a filipina would be closer to 25, the preferred age for locals to marry. Of course that makes youth and inexperience a harder excuse to sell for a 24 year old single mother then a 14 year old one.

As far as Islam and Abu Sayyef/MILF terrorist, well the PNP and armed forces are just as likely to be fighting the communist NPA with their share of Catholic Christians

My Filipino husband says that Islam is not spreading peacefully. His family won’t even go to the south of the country because of it. It probably is getting less devout sure. However, that is not all because of America. I agree with the previous comment about the tv shows. His sisters watch those shows. Wow, those girls don’t wear clothes.

My schoolmate class of 1980 was beheaded by muslim extremists. 😦

They are still a pro-life government and their Supreme Court does not have the power that the US Supreme Couurt has to overide governmental action. But just as most claim to be Catholic yet they joke that a man has an extra girlfriend with every 10,000 pesos a month he has the Philippines has about the highest self reporting abortion rates in Asia. So what if it is illegal so is prostitution yet the government fights to send prosti, I mean entertainers to Japan, Korea etc to remit money back home.

I feel that the above is all true. I have never been near Philipines. But it appears to be the general way of life in all western countries too. I do not blame the christians for it. But it is bad all over the world even though it has nothing to do with the spread Islam in in Philipine.

Although the title of the thread is the spread of Islam the OP seems to be speaking historically not any modern spread of Islam beyond where it survived Spain.

What spread there is seems to be in political power not in converts to Islam. To avoid war first with MNLF, now with MILF and in the future whatever the Muslims who believe that MILF didn’t push hard enough call themselves, the national government has given the Muslims more self rule where their warlords held sway anyway.

Most of the so-called Islam converts come from Filipino oversea workers working in the Arabian Peninsula. About 90% convert into Islam because of fear, greed, convenient, and job security. In Saudi Arabia, the Saudis are throwing money out as an incentive in order to get Filipinos to join the dark side. Then, there are others who convert because of fear, convenient, and job security. However, Islam doesn’t have much appeal with Metro-Manila Filipinos and professional. Most are from the rural area and are coolie. When they return to the Philippines, away goes their Islam.

Yeah your cohorts use blackmail to spread the faith of muhamad. How peaceful. They use ‘convert or kidnap’, ‘convert or extortion’ tactics. I know of big business owners in the south who were forced to convert because of this.

How about farm lands that are cultivated by christians but later to be ransacked by muslim raiders because they are to lazy to even lift a plow. In Mindanao you can definitely identify Christian Land from muslim land…by simply looking at the yield of their fields…staple crops for the Christians, **tall grasses and hays **for muslims.Yeah people in the Philippines have labeled your cohorts as traitors and liars because they personally experienced the teachings of muhammad.

That’s why those who convert to islam are the impoverished and the illiterate of the country sides. People who are rug thugs and tend to bully the Christians with atrocities because in thier opinion they are being abused and maltreated by the government and Christians and they find comfort in a religion of vengeance.

I thought I’m the only one who notices this in the Philippines.

Those who convert:
  1. wanted to have many wives
  2. are weaklings and they want power so that no one can touch them
  3. are poor people who wants protection
  4. are people who are forced to convert for safety reason and
  5. are women who wants financial stabilty even if they are only the second are third wife.
Sorry to say but I have yet to meet a person who converted because tthey find Islam intellectually challenging or because they found the truth inthat religion.
Muslims in the Philippines are like gangs you can’t have a fight with just one of them, if they are loosing, they come back with their muslims brothers, You’ll end up relocating to some other province or you’ll end up dead.

And As I have said before, the only group they can’t touch are the communist party and the Iglesia ni Kristo, coz they know these people fight to death. But the Christians, well they are easy target.😦

I think the hold of the Catholic Church is still their, even if the government doesn’t openly admit it, the Catholic church has definitely influenced the way the nation is being governed.

Sadly the people who care less about the corrupt politics are now also becoming cold towards the church and its teachings.

Cohabitation, has become pragmatic in some degree for the simple reason of the inability of the couple to finance a descent church wedding.

Pre-marital sex and out-of-wedlock pregnancy are prevalent now due to disregard of family quality time. Anyways what country doesn’t have these same problems?

The Key is to pray and act in on our own little way to change for the best.
