Can any one point me in the direction of some documents that provide guidelines for the music at the sprinkling rite? I know the two that are specifically used most are the Vidi Aquam and the Asperges Me but what other texts can be used? What exactly is being conveyed theologically/liturgically at this point in the mass?

Music directors, what settings do you find effective?

Thanks,

I dunno, but avoid what we sang on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord: “Flow, River, Flow”:bigyikes:. Bad, very bad.

The Asperges Me is used in Ordinary Time, the Vidi Aquam is used during Eastertide.

I don’t think there are any specific rules on what is to be used. Often people use the psalm from the easter vigil with the response “You shall draw water joyfully…” Some parishes sing the Gloria during the sprinkling rite, which I do not think should be done, because the Gloria is a distinct part of the Mass, and so is the sprinkling rite. I personally would prefer the Asperges Me and Vidi Aquam (or if they insist on it being something in English, an ACCURATE translation of those prayers.

My wife suggested that I use “As I Went Down to the River to Pray” from “O Brother, Where Art Thou.” I will not use that, though I might suggest it to my priest to catch his reaction.

In reality the two I have used I can remember were “Come to the Water” and “Dona Nobis Pacem”

Peace is flowing like a river, or Mercy is falling, those heigh-ho’s should really get people perked up. Whatever happened to Waters of Life?

The Mass last week they played "Down by the River."

Didn’t seem to fit for such a solemn occasion but it was the only river song the music guy knew 😦
