When’s the last time y’all were at a Mass and the priest sprinkled holy water on people?
It’s been some time for me. I used to have a priest who did it all the time, admittedly probably a bit too often. Still, how often is this done/ should this be done? Thanks

I think with the EF it’s done at every high Mass. I don’t know if that’s the same for the Triduum (except of course for Easter).

In the EF?? I guess most of the Latin Masses I go to are low Masses. I can’t recall being sprinkled at any Latin Mass though… I mostly go to OF Masses.

They probably are. Does the priest approach the altar with the chalice, pall, etc. in his hands?

It’s done on Sundays before a sung Mass or high Mass, but not before these kinds of Masses on other days.

Last time was a couple weeks ago. Our pastor tries to do the Asperges on the first Sunday of every month, but it doesn’t always get done.

(I call it getting asparagussed, but then I am a silly head 😛 )

The last time in my parish was the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord. Of course, the absolute worst song was used for the rite - “Wade in the Water”. Pray for me. I’m formulating a letter to my pastor. There are other issues, so no - not just a quick convo.

The last time I remember having a sprinkling rite was at either for Epiphany or Baptism of the Lord. (Ordinary Form.)

We used to have a priest who was big on using the sprinkling rite too. Unless it was during a penitential season you could pretty much expect the sprinkling rite on Sundays. He was famous for really dousing us.

Our current pastor usually sticks to Easter-time, solemnities (other than Sundays during ordinary time), and special Masses such as for a celebration of a sacrament.

Yeah, our priest at college would get into periods where he would do it every week for a while lol. Now I’m wondering like, is there any reason for it? Are there any guidelines on when this should be happening? I for one kind of miss it at this point lol, bc its been quite some time since I’ve seen it done. But in college, we all thought our priest was a little too fond of it lol.

No, not the last time…but every Sunday during Easter as a reminder of our Baptismal promises…it usually is used optionally for the Kyrie or Confiteor in the Introductory Rites of the Mass (Ordinary Form).

Paragraph 51 of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal says:
On Sundays, especially in the Season of Easter, in place of the customary Act of Penitence, from time to time the blessing and sprinkling of water to recall Baptism may take place.
Appendix II of the Roman Missal itself states:
On Sundays, especially in Easter Time, the blessing and sprinkling of water as a memorial of Baptism may take place from time to time in all churches and chapels, even in Masses anticipated on Saturday evenings.

If this rite is celebrated during Mass, it takes the place of the usual Penitential Act at the beginning of Mass.
That’s about all of the formal direction given by the Church…

At my EF parish, we perform the Vidi Aquam before Missa Cantata every Sunday of Eastertide. Most recently, we did an Asperges on Corpus Christi as part of a Solemn Mass in which we also gave First Holy Communions. Every other Solemn Mass we’ve been able to have since has been for a holy day during the week.

Well, I was away from the Church for a few years. I guess all the Masses I’ve been to since I’ve been going to Church the last 6 months or so weren’t in Easter. So, I guess in Easter I’ll see this being done.

Also, I’m guessing that the Liturgy forum is dominated by Latin Mass goers lol. Makes sense.

Sprinkling is part of the Easter vigil when we renew our baptismal vows. If you haven’t been to one then I highly recommend you go.

There are plenty of people here who are more likely to attend the Ordinary Form.

In my parish we tend to vary the Penitential Rite options by season. Since that is when the rite usually takes place I don’t really expect to see the Sprinkling Rite until the Easter season. But then again, I would not be overly surprised if we have a sprinkling rite.

Happens every Sunday at my parish before High Mass (Latin Mass). I like it and wish it was a regular part of the novus ordo as well.
