Sr. Irene McCormack, RSJ – Australia’s next Saint?
Today marks the 21st anniversary of the death ofJosephite Sr. Irene McCormack, RSJ, at the hands of Shining Path terrorists in Peru. Born in Western Australia in 1938, Irene grew up on a sheep farm and was educated by the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart.
In 1957, Irene entered into the community of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart and began teaching. At an early age Irene knew she wanted to serve God and educate young people. After 30 years of teaching, she was asked to do missionary work in Peru.
She arrived in Peru in 1987 for missionary work. McCormack’s first assignment was in El Pacifico, a low income suburb in San Juan de Miraflores.

Thank you. I read an article about Sr. Irene in the Sydney Sunday paper. Hopefully she will be canonised soon. We also have a girl named Eileen O’Connor who is buried in Sydney. There is a cause for canonisation for her also.

I Pray that both Sr. Irene McCormack and Eileen O’Connor will be Canonized soon as well.

You know something Karenanna I am pretty certain I heard of Eileen O’Connor or I seen a picture of her years ago.

Eileen O’Connor’s body was exhumed some years after her death and was found to be incorrupt. I don’t know if it is still incorrupt. Each year on January 10, pilgrims visit her tomb in a convent chapel near a Sydney beach. January 10 is the anniversary of her death. I visited her tomb to pray to her some years ago.
