Can someone who is attracted to the same sex (as well as the opposite sex) let someone else know that they’re attracted to the same sex?

I know there is a similar thread going on, but the title seems like the topic of that other thread is “should people with SSA be open about it?”. My question is “can a person with SSA let others know?”

Another way to put my question is: “Is it a sin for someone who’s attracted to the same sex (as well as the opposite sex) let others know that they’re attracted to the same sex?”

By the way this is my “pseudonym” account. It’s not my main account. I’ve decided to use this account to ask some questions. Is that ok?

Yes, but as always, prudence is the best course. There should be a good purpose for doing so; otherwise, you can be left in an uncomfortable situation. However, it’s not a sin unless your actions would lead them into sin or be used (with your knowledge) to justify their sinful actions. It’s not a sin to admit you’re addicted to meth but haven’t taken it in 2 years either, if you want a parallel example. The concupiscence and struggle can be discussed, but you have to consider the ramifications of your actions.

Hello Pseudo-whoever-you-are,

As you might infer from my posts on the other thread, I think it would be OK, in most cases. I think it might be especially appropriate for stable friendships, and rather unnecessary (and potentially unhelpful) in the case of most acquaintances. Sometimes it could be done out of bad intentions (e.g. to find out if another person has SSA). So it’s a sort of case-by-case thing.

If I were single now, I would probably be pretty open about my SSA. I’m not sure though. It’s a lot easier said than done. And I definitely wouldn’t be open about my SSA in contexts where I thought someone would get in an argument about how I should “embrace my true identity as a gay man.”

My general rule of thumb for discussing it is: “Would I be telling them about my struggles with other sexual sins in this context?” If them knowing would help with something, e.g. “See I was in XY situation, this is what I did about it”, I tell, if it’s not going to be beneficial, I don’t.

This what makes me want to rejoice and “dance in the spirit”. I am so happy to see those who struggle with SSA, porn addiction and all other problems with lust proclaiming Jesus as their Savior and are faithful to the Catholic Church! PRAISE GOD:extrahappy:

And it makes us so happy when people respond with joy that we are striving to be like Christ, instead of with comments that make us want to go back in our holes and hide!

No kidding. I was watching a Youtube video of a Baptist preacher yesterday who argued that gay men were gay because their parents didn’t treat them rough enough, and implied that lesbians focused too much on sports and weren’t trying hard enough to be attractive/beautiful.

There are still Catholic communities (mostly in rural areas, I find) where stuff like the above happens unfortunately, but I sleep well at night knowing that my Church sees me as an equal and full person, and not as a product of my parents’ so-called failures.

Don’t thank me, my Brother in Christ. Remember St Austin. As the bastard son of a drug addicted single mother that aborted my two older siblings just becasue they were black, as someone that was exposed to many evil things at a very young age and now have Crosses to Bear, and little less than a year ago, I came back to the Church. I have no right to tell persons with SSA, a Cross they chose not to bear that they are somehow are not welcomed in the loving arms of the Holy Family and can not be touched by the Holy Ghost.

As I said before. REMEMBER ST. AUSTIN!!!

In my opinion the answer is no. Putting that around is almost like offering yourself to someone of like mind. In other words that could be putting yourself in occasion to sin.

On a separate issue (and I’m not 100% sure I am correct) I don’t think forum rules allow a member to have more than one account.

Perhaps it is worth balancing this worry with the worry that excessive secrecy will make a person ashamed? Believe me, being ashamed of one’s temptations is also the near occasion of sin. And sharing my SSA in a church setting (for example) makes *other *people with SSA feel less ashamed of themselves, which might help them come to a place of healing.

Also, the OP didn’t seem to be asking about “putting it around”, that is, telling everyone. I think the question was more about telling some people, likely people that they trust. Suppose that I had spent time as a drug addict – shouldn’t I be free to share this fact with friends, with good intentions, even though it might turn out that one of my friends is a drug dealer (and thus this puts him in the near occasion of sin)?

I just worry that we deal with people with SSA like they cannot control themselves, sexually. This is false; they are people with free will. Straight men know women who would sleep with them, in many cases – is that all it takes for there to be a near occasion of sin? If the actions of men with SSA make people think that they lack control of their sexual impulses, this is probably because these men are so ashamed of their attractions that they let the shame push them into sinning. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy: we think you’re a pervert, so you act like a pervert.

I myself cautioned earlier in this thread about the occasions of sin, so I know where you’re coming from. But there is such a thing as being too cautious.

I see nothing wrong with being open about SSA providing you are cautious about who you talk to about it. Some people respond with caring and support. Some are gossips and cruel. Some completely misunderstand and think that a person who is attracted to both sexes is homosexual and in denial. If I were struggling with SSA I’d only tell people who are capable of understanding and who aren’t likely to gossip or be cruel.

I remember reading the rules before making this account just to make sure. I didn’t see anything that said I couldn’t make another account. I could have missed something, however.

If I’m talking to a guy and tell him I find Josh Radnor (Ted on How I Met Your Mother) attractive, is that me “offering myself” to him? Of course not. So why do you think it’s the same way when discussing a SSA? I agree with ProdigalSon; we need to be more open about our SSAs to keep kids who have them from feeling unwelcome in the faith and defecting to the gay “rights” movement.
