SSM and forcing churches to comply

The Church in the U.S. won’t even investigate a marriage (for an annullment) until the couple gets a civil divorce. It’s not that it’s not “recognized”, it’s simply that a civil divorce does not end a valid marriage in God’s eyes. The couples civil marriage is ended as far as the government is concerned, and the Church acknowledges that (according to the Catechism, sometimes in order to protect one of the spouses and the children, physically or financially, a civil divorce can be necessary) Religiously speaking they are still married.

In Christ,
Ellen
Ahhh…so we’re talking civil divorce…will the government force the Catholic church to marry civilly divorced people who have not been given a decree of nullity? No…of course not…so neither will they force the Catholic church to marry same sex couples…civil marriage is not a religious marriage necessarily…the “fear” tactic of claiming the government will require churches to marry same sex couples just does not hold up if one is honest about what NOW occurs with civilly married people who get divorced and want to marry in the Catholic church…it doesn’t happen…it won’t happen…and neither will the government force religous institutions to marry same sex couples if they don’t force them to marry opposite sex couples…but it definitely gets a lot of play when all that’s left is “we’re going to be forced to do such and such…so that’s why we don’t want same sex marriage to become legal.”…it doesn’t wash with too much of anyone.

He’s afraid of the non-profit status being taken away and having sanctions put on churches. There hasn’t been governments forcing sanctions and the like in countries that allow SSM, has there?
Actually, yes, there have been. Denmark has mandated that all churches marry gay couples.

Remember when First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs refused to marry an African American couple? What they did was not illegal, because of the church exemption.
Actually, what was noted in the article IS illegal. Unlike other types of discrimination, racial discrimination is specifically addressed in the U.S. Constitution. Religious institutions may not discriminate on the basis of race under any circumstances.

I will make one of my rare political predictions vis a vie SSM.
The day the Federal or a State Government forces a Church Priest, Rabbi, Minister or Congregation to hold a Gay Wedding in its Church or on its property, that is the day an awful lot of people in the USA are going to grab their guns and go into the streets! It may not be right, but it will happen to a degree that the liberals cannot forsee. Also, on that day, the backlash will be so strong that most overtly gay people will wish they could crawl under the floor boards of the mythical closet! Go ahead and call me anti-gay or a gay basher, you do not know the temper of people in the rural Mid-West and Deep Soutth, especially amongst the Evangelical Christians! Most of these people are already fed up with the Social Engineering on the part of the Federal Government!

While I would consider this an extreme last resort - very extreme, very last resort - it would all depend on whether or not the people still have their guns. 🤷
I would also say that gays would be the wrong target (I am using “target” in a metaphorical sense, not a literal one), the government would be.

Generally, however, we need to be quite careful as Christians on a Catholic Christian forum not to appear to be promoting a stance that threatens violence.

Your friend is engaging in Chicken Little Syndrome which is most likely a byproduct of listening to conservative talk radio.

No one is going to tell individual churches that they have to change their theology and marry certain persons. It violates the separation of church and state. Though, considering how much religion tries to stick its nose in government business, I find it ironic that the same organizations are terrified about the big, bad government coming to get them.

This, of course, is assuming you live in the United States. I can’t speak for any other country.
How do you feel about the HHS mandate?

Or rather how is your definition above not what is happening with that mandate?

Certainly! Because nothing ushers in the Kingdom of God faster than guns in the streets! If Christ had only realized this on Palm Sunday, what a different world we would live in today!

However the Romans did allow the local people to practice their faith. And even then there were armed Jews who provided resistance to total Roman rule.

Brought up to the last century with no resistance we have North Korea and in Mexico after the 1926 war an overeaching government backed off. I do believe many vetrans of that fighting were, what is the correct term?, made Saints.
