The only Latin Mass I can find in my area is an SSPV mass. One of my friends holds them up as being akin to the SSPX’ers and I wanted some more opinions on the matter. Anyone have one for me?

Stay away from them…they are Sedevacantist/Sedeprivationist. Basically, they separated from the SSPX because they felt the SSPX was not radical enough in their direction. While their Masses are probably valid, they are almost certainly illicit.

I too will tell you that SSPV is sedivacantis. SSPX is not sedivacantis. Even though they are at odds with the Holy Father and Vatican in general, SSPX accepts and respects the Holy Father. Check out their website sspx.org, you can access a list of their chapels, plus you can get information on who SSPX is .

From what I understand of the SSPV, they do not officially adopt the sedevacantist position but they are sympathetic to it, meaning that people that do adopt it tend to frequent their chapels. I know very little about them so I could be wrong.

Nevertheless, the good news is that everyone has a website now! If you’re interested in knowing more about the SSPV, I’d check this out. I doubt they’re concerned about hiding their views on various issues, so you should be able to find any answers to your questions there.

I have some knowledge of SSPV. If they not Sedevacantist then they are missing a good chance. Their Masses are beautiful fully traditional Catholic. Their Nuns are super great too. In fact if you want to learn more about them, they have an online radio broadcast at www.wftsradio.com/

I love their Rosary but tend not to listen to the Homilies.

The SSPV have separated ties with the Holy Father, whom they do not recognize as a legitimate pope. They consider the matter up in the air as to who is the pope. They are a schismatic splinter, expelled from the SSPX and have produced other splinters since, so it is a role of the dice as to what exactly any specific group believes.

Criticize all you want, but when my Society of St. Pius I takes off, dedicated to maintaining the true Mass as it was practiced in Aquileia in 150 AD before all the subsequent modernist heresies, we won’t rest until the Vatican gives in to our demands for the vernacular language, Mass around a table, and deaconesses!

Dominus misereatur!!! Oh, I forgot. 150 AD. Kyrie eleison!!!

Don’t make me sic my cat on you.
👍

Their Masses are valid but they think the holy See is vacant since John XXIII.

I was considering forming the Society of St. Pius XIII. Our first action would be to beatify and canonize Pius XIII (aka Lucien Pulvmacher) using some bizarre and convoluted reasoning.

After that, we will require that every Catholic watch the movie “Foul Play” as there was a fictional pope named Pius XIII in that movie.

Then we will proceed to elect Chevy Chase pope.

There’s a chapel here in my hometown, where I go for Mass. I go JUST FOR THE MASS-I try to stay away from the ‘politics’.

I’ve also gone to the Sisters’ convent several times, and been to their ceremonies of Clothing and Profession. Last year was their 25th anniversary.

I listen to the online radio broadcasts, but I’m sad when I hear them speak ill of Pope Benedict XVI. I sent an email to the weekly call-in program, but asked to remain anonymous as to name and location. I asked the question, ‘Why do some traditional Catholics put down the Divine Mercy devotion?’ And the priest who is on the program said that it was ‘Modernist’ and ‘Novus Ordo’ [their ‘buzz words’, it seems 🤷 ]. I know that if I asked any of the priests ‘in person’ the same question, I’d get the same answer.

But I like the priests who come to say the Mass at the chapel here-they’re good preachers. They always start out with a story. I have tapes of the Sisters’ recordings-I love their singing! I just wish that they would REALLY LISTEN to what Benedict XVI is saying, and not dismiss him outright by saying, ‘He’s a Modernist…he’s Novus Ordo.’ !

I think of myself as a ‘Traditional Catholic who is also a Papist’ ! :o

I support the Holy Father in his ‘Marshall Plan’ for the Church; so when I am among the SSPV people, I have to be very careful of my opinions. I have to have prudence and discretion in what I think and what I say. I emphathize with them in their feelings of being on the ‘outside’ all these years-it’s really hard, especially for the children who attend their schools. How will they cope being thrown into the midst of people who don’t think and believe as they do once they leave the ‘shelter’ of chapel, family and school? It seems to me that there is a ‘bunker mentality’ among some of the SSPV supporters.

So I’m kind of ‘straddling’…:o…I like being among them, but I distance myself from the extreme thoughts they have…

I’m afraid you’re a little bit late. 😦

That said, there’s still room to apply!
ANNOUNCEMENT: Real Traditionalist Priests wanted!!
No priest has of yet had the courage to join our brave and heroic movement. So we are currently looking for Greek-speaking priests who may have said the liturgy of St. Justin Martyr in their youth. Candidates must be able to prove Apostolic Succession directly from Popes Peter, Linus, Cletus or Clement. NOTE: Greek Catholic/ Greek Orthodox Rite priests NEED NOT APPLY!!! We have arbitrarily decided not to like you guys either.

This is pretty true for a lot of parishes, though. For instance, we’ve got a couple sedes at the Diocesan TLM in town. 😉 You wouldn’t know it because they never say anything so I think that they just go for Mass too.

Likewise, we had sedes at the SSPX and the FSSP in my hometown. Again, they never said anything because such views are discouraged in both places.

The way I see it, as long as you’re not massively uncomfortable with the politics, that’s fine. I’ve been able to meet lots of interesting people that I otherwise completely disagree with on matters of Papal succession merely by knowing when to raise an argument and when to keep silent. 😉

LOL – awesome! That should be required reading on this board; here are just a couple of my favorite lines:

Finally, the article quotes the liturgical historian Rauschen as saying:

“We must then admit that between the years 400 and 500 a great transformation was made in the Roman Canon.”

What more proof could anyone POSSIBLY need?! The so-called “Traditional Latin Mass” is NOT traditional at all!!! It’s a drastic change in 200 years of liturgical tradition, and one concocted by unknown scholars and unaccountable liturgical “experts.” It is a dangerous modern innovation that is putting millions of souls in jeopardy!!

FACT: Latin is NOT the original language of the Church!

It’s a VERNACULAR language that was foisted on the Roman church by Pope Victor I (A.D. 190-202), who was an AFRICAN priest–NOT a Roman!!!

. . .

Wouldn’t you want to use a language that was actually spoken by the Apostles, rather than some barbarian language spoken by goatskin wearing savages? EVERY SINGLE BOOK of the New Testament was written in GREEK. Not Latin. Not Syriac. Not Coptic. Not Old Church Slavonic. And especially not English. This fact alone PROVES that these other languages are inventions of SATAN and CONDEMNED BY GOD.

So whatever later so-called “Popes” may have said about the use of Latin, it IS NOT TRADITIONAL!!!

. . .

The Pantheon for instance, was a PAGAN Roman temple which was reconsecrated as a church by Pope Boniface in A.D. 609!! Pagan building, Catholic building–what’s the difference, right??

. . .

Neotrads love to say their Mass goes back to Pope Gregory I in the 6th century. But how much do they REALLY know about this ultraliberal legislator who helped solidify the final destruction of the TRUE traditional Roman Rite?

Even a pope firmly entrenched in the Vulgar Mass, Benedict XIV said that “no pope has added to, or changed the Canon since St. Gregory.” He thus ADMITS that St. Gregory changed the Canon!!!

. . .

But to answer the question on everyone’s mind, was Pope Gregory a Freemason? Despite apparently accurate claims that the organization did not even exist back then, the Freemasons THEMSELVES claim otherwise, and say that they date back to Ancient Egypt. It is therefore POSSIBLE that a fifth century pope may have joined the organization. Significtantly, our top researchers at the Society have NOT been able to DISPROVE Gregory’s membership in the Masons, and, most importantly, NEITHER HAS ANYONE ELSE. Prudence therefore DEMANDS that we treat all of his liturgical “reforms” as HIGHLY suspect and potentially heretical.

. . .

Most shockingly of all, Jerome also wrote a book called “Dialogue with the Luciferians”–LUCIFER??? Is there NO ONE these neotrads won’t DIALOGUE with!!! At what point do we just say–NO… WE DON’T DIALOGUE WITH LUCIFERIANS!!!
My only regret can be not to have written it first.

If you cannot find a TLM near you, I would suggest that you seek out an Eastern Catholic Church (in communion with Rome).

But the SSPX’s masses are just as illicit.

Yes!

The SSPV most definately is not akin to the SSPX. The SSPX is not schismatic (As Cardinal Ratzinger has said), per say, but is in “imperfect communion”.

Their mass is valid, not licit.

So is the SSPV. And, er, the Eastern Orthodox. “Valid” does not equate to “Catholics should go!” or even “Hey, it’s Catholic!”
Yes, any Mass said outside the Catholic church, properly, can be valid but illicit, right?
But, I would, and do criticize the SSPV, not the people who go to their chapels, invalid clergy. I do have some knowledge of the SSPV. I was once in contact with a Nun of their society, from the Daughters of Mary. She told me, that it is not in their position (or the society) to say if the current Pope was true or not. Though, she kind of gave it away that she wasn’t in Communion with the church, because I explicitly asked her “Were they in Communion with the Church?”
I even posted a thread in the Vocations about it, to see if they were in communion with the church or not (long lost :)).

But, the SSPV is not in communion with the Church, and the SSPX is in “imperfect communion”, so you would be better off going to the SSPX, but it still doesn’t fulfill your Sunday obligation. (Please correct me if I’m wrong, I can’t find a document on that issue, just what people have said 😉 )

The SSPV calls itself the “Tridentine Catholic Church” and other various names, which confuses me.
