SSPX and Angelus Press

Does anyone know very much about SSPX and the Angelus Press? I have had some communication with someone representing both of them and the topic has been communion should only be received on the tongue and never reception of both species. A book entitled *Communion in the Hand *which is available from Angelus Press was recommended to me and sent to me via e-mail, but I only began reading it and stopped.

I have purchased many books from Angelus Press and have always had great service and high quality products.

They are the publishing arm of SSPX. I attended their Masses for many years and even got to meet Abp Lefebvre in 1980. He was a very Holy Man.

I have the highest respect for the Society. I just pray that they can conclude a “just” reconciliation with the Holy Father.

I don’t know the book, but the Angelus Press website blurb for the book says:

All that has been elaborated on permits us to realize that the history of the reintroduction of Communion in the hand is nothing other than the triumph of an act of disobedience.
It is most serious because it implies the open resistance to an explicit and solidly founded directive of the pope, and because those who did not obey were not only priests, but in many cases bishops and entire episcopal conferences.

And there is no doubt that all of that is true. Communion in the Hand was introduced as an act of defiant disobedience and only much later permitted. Thus: the triumph of an act of disobedience.

Angelus Press is the English-language publishing arm of the SSPX. Most of the books they publish are reprints of classic Catholic books of the past. Some, such as this book you referenced, are more recent books written to attack perceived abuses in the modern Church.

The SSPX itself is a fraternity of priests that believes that at least some of the documents of the 2nd Vatican Council contain some doctrinal errors. They believe that the New Mass fails to conform to the Catholic theology of the Mass as defined at the Council of Trent and is harmful to the Faith, although remaining formally a valid Mass. Therefore they refuse to celebrate the New Mass and preach that Catholics should never attend a New Mass. They celebrate only the Traditional Latin Mass.

Officially, the SSPX is suppressed and all priests of the SSPX are suspended. But nonetheless the SSPX continues to grow and flourish. Just today (9/14/2011) the Superior General of the SSPX, met with Cardinal Levada at the Vatican to discuss the position of the SSPX in the Church.

Angelus Press puts out lots of great books. Some stuff has an obvious axe to grind, and I tend to avoid it; other stuff is cool, hard-to-find, and good quality. I’ve never had any problems ordering from them.

A group of us had asked our FSSP priest if it was okay to support them by buying their products when they were accepting pre-orders for a new version of an old missal, and he assured us it was fine.

So as a bookseller, Angelus Press is great. As far as the individual books go, I’d take some like yours with a grain of salt-- they have a very specific mindset/perception when it comes to “modernism”

which is good and valid in some ways, but often takes the form of “Oh noes!” in regards to some (many? all?) of the changes that resulted from Vatican II.

From what I understand, communion in the hand is very much a US thing, and far less common in the rest of the world, and receiving on the tongue is generally perceived as more respectful. (?) But denying the congregation the opportunity to receive under both species — and actively discouraging it— is something that I have difficulty getting behind.
