From Rorate Caeli:

“URGENT: Vaticanist Andrea Tornielli reports today in Il Giornale that an agreement of the Holy See with the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (FSSPX / SSPX) may be very near. Some days ago, the Superior General of the Fraternity, Bishop Bernard Fellay, met with the President of the Pontifical Commission “Ecclesia Dei” and, before June 28, the Fraternity should decide to accept the five conditions proposed by Rome.”

I am not going to hold my breath on this one!

And I would like to be shown that I am wrong but I cannot imagine that ALL the SSPX would return! There is too much water under the bridge and too much bitterness among some.

I hope that something can be worked out but there are some implacable ones who will not give an inch.

Oh, many prayers, especially to Pope St Pius X whose heart must be breaking at the division between his successor in Rome and the SSPX who have named themselves after him.

May God guide the Hearts and Spirits of all to heal this wound in the Body of Christ.

Peace
James

I have a feeling it this won’t work out. I just can’t imagine the SSPX agreeing to all the conditions.

There were several “demands” by the sspx to return to Rome; the latin mass was never really one of them. If you read the FAQ’s of their website you’ll see that they have many problems with the modern Church. If they do return, they’ll have to swallow hard!

I do not support the sspx in their disobedience, but it would be nice to see this all come to a peaceful conclusion.

I hope it works out.

I’m curious on one thing though. One of the things SSPX wanted was the lifting of the the excommunions. In the case of Lefebvre what difference would it make. If someone has been excommunicated and they do not repent before death then they will go to Hell. Lifting the excommunication would not change that. He can’t move from Hell to Heaven.

There were similar hopes before June 30 1988. Only time will tell what happens this time 😦

Hopefully this time accepting heresy won’t be a condition for the SSPX to be regularized.

Ain’t gonna happen. Not right now at least. The SSPX would want special concessions if they were to return Home and they ain’t gonna get them. They will be completely and thoroughly subsumed by the Church if/when they return and I think their egos are still bloated with too much pride at this time for it to happen. Their fixation on the change from “for many” into “for all” is a prime example.

They aren’t low on cash, are they?

I do hope they choose full reunification. The Vatican seems to be offering them a Personal Prelature, which is, IMHO, extraordinarily generous and shows much good will.

But unfortunately the mood among the SSPX leadership would appear somewhat dour. The aforementioned blog has been updated, and here is an excerpt from a sermon of one of Bishop Fellay’s right-hand men:
His Excellency made it a public concern to everyone at the ordination. But, to reassure the faithful, that’s all, to simply reassure the faithful that we carry on, and if Rome wants to punish us for that,w ell, hey, I’m sorry, what is our crime? For a punishment, there must be a crime.
When will the wound be allowed to heal? Rome appears to have done everything possible.

Of course it could all be bluster on this gentleman’s part, and it is quite possible full reunification will come.

God, may it be so.

This is yet another reason why we must pray! We can only HOPE that all of the SSPX will return joyfully.

Indeed. The fate of some one million (est.) Catholics is a serious matter. Lord help us.
