Yes Brother, but in fairness you must admit that more than likely without the SSPX the EF would have been lost and essentially forgotten except by historians and those that mourned its passing. I remember those dark days very well and I know just how much flat out and out hatred, for lack of a better word, existed among certain Priests and Bishops toward the EF.

The SSPX was the group that pretty much singlehandedly kept the EF alive, and I cannot believe that would have happened without the intervention of the Holy Spirit. Say what you will about the Society but that one salient fact can never be taken away from them or denied.
And yet, the Dominican Friars of the Western Dominican Priory were reclaiming their heritage by expanding their use of the Dominican Mass, both in the priory and in the parishes they staffed, throughout the last 3 decades of the 20th C… And the Dominican Mass is in fact the circa 1200 AD missal of Rome…

The Mozarabic, Bragan, and Ambrosian Rites as well continued to be used as EFs…

Far too many are quick to praise the SSPX for things it wasn’t alone in doing, while ignoring the others doing the same thing.

the SSPX are the most visible, but not the sole impetus.

I have to say one thing here that really bugs me. Very few things do, but this one does.

I think we have to learn to choose our words more carefully. Just listen to what people sound like when they say, “Vatican II was just a pastoral council.”

The primary duty of the Church is pastoral care, also known as the care of souls. When we put the term “just” in front of pastoral, we’re sending a message to non-Catholics who may be lurking here. The message says that we’re OK as long as we have the rituals and that pastoral care is something separate and less important or even unimportant. We separate the rites from the rest.

When the truth is told, in a 24-hour day, any parish, any religious house, any hospital, any Catholic school or college, spends one hour in liturgy and 23 in pastoral care.

I think we need to back off “JUST a pastoral council”. Find another way of making the point that it did not decree dogma.

It is also very offensive to those of us who pastoral care. Not all of us are monks in a cloister. Many of us take pastoral care very seriously. I would not be on these forums if I did not take it so seriously.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂

You’re right. But to be fair, one may also want to include Agatha Christie and two Anglican bishops and a few non-Catholics who petitioned Pope Paul VI to retain the Latin Mass in England.

I don’t think that I would give Agatha Christie the same billing that I would give to the Dominican Friars, the Mozarabic, the Gallicans, Ambrosians, and Bragans. Though I do like her books much better than Aquinas’ Summa. 😃

For one thing, they’re shorter. 😛 If you ever tell the Dominicans that I said this, I’ll deny every word.

Thanks, Brother.
Very true and very beautiful.

I amazed reading this kind of thread.

There are people who wish to believe that they have rights to disregard anything that is not explicitly infallible from the Church, yet the first to decry and condemn if a priest wear his alb over his chasuble for Mass.
You see, most liturgical rubrics are not infallible statements.

So where is the logical coherence?

The same with canon law. While maintaining that the Pope is the last authority of appeal, highest and authentic interpreter of canon law (as stated in the law itself), people keep on arguing and arguing and arguing that he was wrong regarding excommunication bla bla bla.

Interesting, no?
