I’m not sure there is even an answer to what the Church’s position on it, since it’s so new.
It should be respected because it is a teaching of a Pontiff.
But, the dominant “Christopher West” interpretation is very troubling to me. According to this (the way it seems to me) TOTB is the best thing since sliced bread, it has revolutionized the Church, the Church used to be, before Vatican II a silly old anti-sex institution but now we’ve seen the light, etc.
There are those, like Dawn Eden (whom I respect immensely) who argue that it TOTB is better interpreted in harmony with tradition. JPII didn’t pull it out of thin air, and it is based in the constant moral teaching of the Church.
Others (I’m probably most in this category, with a little of #3) would say it was not really necessary, it may bear some great fruit, but there was nothing deficient or lacking in previous teaching on marriage, and time will tell. Read Casti Conubii.
