If it wasn’t before Pope Benedict, it certainly has been by Pope Benedict. There is no higher authority in the Catholic Church than the pope. If you deny his authority to state the suspensions still in effect, then you are denying the authority of the pope as Patriarch of Rome. The following quotes show that’ rome’s position is clear: no licit ministry.
Okay, okay, no need to overdramatize the situation. Unless you, of course, enjoy doing it.

It seems as if there a quite a few Easterners posting on this forum. One would thing they would side with and defend the traditionalists. Guess they would rather pour salt on the wounds, though.

The typical eastern experience with the SSPX lay-adherents is that they often don’t accept anything other than the TLM as valid. To and including the Eastern Liturgies; liturgies, on average, older than the Roman Mass, and definitely older than the Trent-approved Missal.

The SSPX itself has upheld the validity of the Eastern Liturgies, but the laymen who are attracted often are not favorably disposed to the Eastern Churches, and even those who are often are attempting to latinize the parishes.

Further, aside from often being a major source of disruption in Eastern parishes, quite a few have a very different idea of Tradition than do the Roman Traditionalists, and of the value of the diversity of the Liturgies of the Church. Many Traditionalists object to the vernacular; most Easterns endorse it.

The only thing truly wrong with an SSPX mass is who says it. But the issue of the SSPX is far larger than just the “schismatic act” of Archbishop Lefebvre and the bishops he ordained; it includes the fostering of what is, in practical terms, many faithful attending their masses out of schismatic intent, and many more in ignorance.

Oh, and it’s no less acceptable to attend a Russian Orthodox Divine Liturgy than to attend an SSPX mass.

If Catholics can go to Protestant services as guests, then why can they not go to Orthodox and SSPX parishes so long as they fulfill their Sunday obligation?

Heretical? Please define the heresies they hold.

They accept VII as a valid Council. Lets not forget that VII was unique in that it was pastoral, not dogmatic, in nature.

Evidence points otherwise that it is accpetable to attend their Mases. Approval by Church officals to attend at SSPX Chapels + approval by Church officials for public Masses at diocesan churches, such as St. Peters and Lourdes
Yes, so far as it is made public, the SSPX was excommunicated only because of disobedience, not for committing heresy. I tried to get the official scoop from the Vatican website, but I couldn’t find any on the SSPX.

I don’t think it angers anyone. For certain “acceptable” is in the category of feint praise. Neocatechumen Way, Life Teen Mass, communion in the hand, girl altar servers, various lay ministries, all acceptable.

I guess what I am saying is that it is good to see you point out that assisting at an SSPX Mass is acceptable, something I said in my first post here. Now would be the time to shed double standards. If do not like to be criticized for attending a Mass that the Vatican has said is acceptable, then the Golden Rule would dictate that you and the SSPX stop criticizing all the other things in the Catholic Faith that are acceptable.

You guys do still keep the Golden Rule, don’t you?

The flip side is for those that want to go beyond what the Church has said and act like there is no good reason for ever attending an SSPX Mass, or that it is sinful for those that do. It is acceptable.
It is a quandary that all are acceptable.

They can, when there is need. But the problem is that many set too low a standard for need. (Cdl. Arinze, 2007.)

Catholics may assist at Orthodox liturgies; even receive if the priest lets them. The SSPX differ in that, whilst not in formal schism (that they are in practical schism is another matter), they, unlike the Orthodox, are not licitly performing the sacraments.

If you can’t get to a licit mass, an illicit-but-valid one is an alternative.

(and those who quote that 2004 letter, it wasn’t addressed to the public, but to one woman in particular; we do not know the content of the dubium, and therefore the scope.)

No “need” is required to attend SSPX Masses except a love for the '62 liturgy and a desire to not separate oneself from the Pope. The Sunday obligation is fulfilled according to Canon Law “in any Catholic Rite”.

Catholics can only attend Orthodox liturgies according to Canon Law IF genuine spiritual advantage requires it AND the danger of indifferentism is avoided. Seeing as how the Sunday obligation is waived if it is impossible to get to a Catholic Mass, one is never obligated to assist at a schismatic and non-Catholic Orthodox liturgy.

The Orthodox are not “licitly performing the sacraments” either as their priests are in formal schism.

The 2008 letter from Mershon responded to a general question and did not deal with his specific circumstance, thus it can be relied on by all. In addition, a Cardinal previous to 2004 responded that since the Sunday obligation could be fulfilled at any Catholic Rite that included the Society Masses.

The 2004 letter clarification from PCED was made publicly.

Aramis,

When you invent a new canonical term like “practical schism”, please help us out with a definition. The Vatican has stated that it is OK to assist at an SSPX Mass regardless of whether another licit Mass is available.

The SSPX functions exactly as a schismatic church; they ignore Rome’s instructions, they have set up parallel hierarchies, and have made reunification demands upon Rome exactly in the same manner as the Russian Orthodox… as if they are outside the Catholic Church.

In short, I find it fair to say that SSPX Masses are not OK to attend for the average Catholic until the SSPX are normalized with the Vatican. We should be very happy when this happens.

Thank you, Mr Fish, to share your decrees with us , but in short, the Vatican has stated that it is acceptable to assist at the SSPX Mass.

Once again, your blog-acquired knowledge of SSPX affairs is astounding.

There is no alternate hierarchy - the SSPX operates like a religious order. It has not set up diocese, Cardinals, Patriarchs, or Popes. Matters of religious discipline, fasts, feasts, etc follow the 1962 calendar and ordo. Once again, please consult with your blogosphere and list the specific instructions of Pope Benedict that have been ignored.

A common error made by those who oppose the sspx position is to assume that we do not recognize the Pope/V11/Novus Ordo mass as legitimate. Nothing is further from the truth. The Novus Ordo is perfectly legal. How could it not be? The truth of the matter is the the sspx adherents do not like it for it’s dumbing down and protestantized capitulation. If you see things differently that’s fine. We have no problem with you. We simply prefer the the tlm that so many tried to take away from us when the church steered away from tradition. We do not oppose you attending the Novus Ordo. Unfortunately, the converse is not true. That’s all.

You’ve presented a circular argument here. I would say you’re not average if you attend an SSPX. But then you’re not “average” if you attend an EF of any kind.

It has set up parishes under the omophor of the SSPX bishops and not under the authority of the local bishops. That, functionally, is a diocese, a bishop and those parishes under his omophor. And that, since they have no permission from the valid hierarchy to set up parallel jurisdictions, is acting as a schismatic church. Which they’ve done for 15+ years.

Can you please provide proof of this? I am wrong when I am wrong then.😃

What new bishops have been consecrated since 1988? You’re making it sound like a continuous process. A truly schismatic church would persist in doing what got them into schism in the first place and this just hasn’t happened.

They have set up parishes since the bishops were ordained; and they continue to ordain men even when specifically requested to not do so (as the last round of ordinations indicates, per B 16’s request). The fact that new bishops have not been ordained is only one part of a continual activity which indicates that they seem intent on growing whether or not they achieve reunion with Rome.

When one adheres to the traditional catholic faith, growth is inevitable. For the record, the SSPX Bishops do not sit around planning where to put their next chapel. Rather, they respond to the requests of the faithful who petition to have a Mass said in a particular locality. Whether that grows into a chapel with a regular recurring Mass is completely up to the faithful in that area.

You spout from the same anti-SSPX blog talking points as others do on this board, but of course you are at a complete loss to quote the “specific request” from Pope Benedict XVI to cease to ordain any more priests.
