SSPX Priest Salary?

I know parishes are required to publish their annual balance sheets. It should be there.
The SSPX is separated from the Church, and doesn’t consider itself bound to the laws of the Church, so they may or may not publish their financial information.

In any case, individual salaries are privileged information, so they are normally lumped together into one number, to include all of the salaries - secretarial, janitorial, priest, and any other salaries that are paid out by the parish.

I though it was civil law that requires this, not the Church. Although a balance sheet would show the total amount of salaries paid to priests, so if you have more than one priest attached to that parish, its a guess how much each one would make. You can maybe divide it by the number of priests to get a rough idea.

Also, I think you just opened a can of worms there with the “separated from the Church” statement. Brace yourself. 😃

Churches are private institutions and I am not sure that they must publicly publish their financial information.

On a balance sheet they may list all salaries in one group, not necessarily listing only the priests.

Public corporations are required to publish their balance sheets. I thought it is part of the condition for religious institutions to remain tax free, to be transparent with their finances.

In our parish, the salaries of priests are one entry, separate from other salaries. And since we have only one priest, that points to his entire salary.

I was curious what the salary of a SSPX priest is?
Why not ask an SSPZ priest, rather than a Roman Catholic website designed for people who honor the theological virtue of obedience, i.e., with the Roman Catholic Church?

Churches are not public institutions, they are private.

But the tax free thing might be a point.

But really, I don’t think its anyones business what the priest’s salary is.

But then that may just be me.

Well I did this a long time ago. The priest was uncomfortable and did not answer. I guess it made me look like I was thinking about the priesthood for the money but that was not the case. I think a lot of everyday people are uncomfortable with this question but I would like to know the answer because I am thinking about becoming an SPPX priest sometime in the future. I am not in it for the money I am just curious.

Well our diocesan priest is not making more than the minimum wage. Granted of course his board and lodging is overhead of the parish, so he doesn’t pay rent/mortgage, utilities, property taxes, etc, out of his own pocket. Not sure if food expenses are his or the parish, probably his.

I hope by the time you become an SSPX priest their Canonical issues with the Church would have been resolved. Have you considered being a FSSP priest instead?

Thanks ConstantineTG for part of the answer. That was going to my second part of the question what is the salary spent on I am guessing food, clothes and running a car. The part about minimum wage I am guessing is after you divide all the hours he works. In the seminary the days are about 16 hours long I am not sure how long a priest day is? I have my heart set on the SSPX.

Oh, when I said minimum wage, I meant 40-hours per week minimum wage. Being a priest is full-time 24/7 job. There are other things he can do to earn more money. Our former pastor teaches all around the diocese, so he gets paid for that (he’s an expert on Theology of the Body). They may also get some sort of stipend or allowance for saying Mass outside of their own parish, should another parish ask them to help fill in.

Mind you all these are just from what I gather from a diocesan priest. I’m not sure how one in a secular society would operate, but probably not that different. I would suspect even those within Religious Orders and works within a diocese would get paid the same way, only that they would forward all their salary to their Order.

Things like car, yes, would be paid for by you. I’m not sure about further education. Our former pastor said he had to pay for his education in Europe. Not sure if the SSPX would have you pay for any extra education or if they will provide for some within the society.

Why don’t you join a religion you like?

I think you are right. I think in a secular society they spend money like a diocese priest. I don’t think they forward all their salary to their Order. Maybe we will find a SSPX expert on this board.

The SSPX is separated from the Church,
Huge can of hogwash. If a society of clergy are “separated” from the Church in the manner you describe, they are in schism.
  • If they were in schism, then why are they “suspended” ? How can clergy not in the Church be subject to suspensions ?
  • If a group is in schism, they are excommunicated, are they not ? Why would H.H. BXVI lift excommunications on Bishops if they were in schism ?

While some of you may find this topic interesting, it borders on intrusion. The priests of the Society have a right to their privacy. Such information has no business on a public forum unless the priests themselves wish to share it.
