So I was wondering, did anyone become Catholic through an SSPX church?

I’ve been thinking about joining the church and have been attending masses at a nearby parish, but than I found out that their’s an SSPX chapel in my city and I want to go and check it out.

I was part of the Pentacostal church but I left it years ago and have been floating around when it came to religion and finally went to a Mass and really liked it. When I found out about the tridentine mass I was very intrigued. I watched a video of one on youtube and thought it was absolutely beautiful, if I’m going to join the church I would want to do it with the Tridentine Mass.

If you went to SSPX masses and or joined the church through the society, could you please share your experiences?

Thank You!

Most SSPX chapels are relatively small (with a few exceptions) and the people there are very friendly. If you are expecting a church full of people who talk only about Vatican II, veils on women, etc than I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed. 🙂

If you want to join the Catholic Church through an SSPX chapel, then I do not think that they have an RCIA program; I’m not sure though, but I think you will just receive a solid and genuine catechism course and then be baptized, et cetera.

Since Pope Benedict on TWO separate occasions just in 2009 said that SSPX clergy do NOT exercise any legitimate ministry in the Catholic Church, you cannot join her through SSPX.

And the form of mass doesn’t matter. You don’t join the Church “through a mass.” You may not know this, but there are 23 separate sui juis Churches in the Catholic Church using at least a half-dozen different “masses”.

Um…yes you can.

👍

Is SSPX in union with our Pope?

If not, and if our Pope made the above statements, then you are not joining a catholic church. You are joining a schismatic group.

If anyone can give a clear technical summary of this position, or refute it, I would appreciate it.

I would comment here but I’ve been “chastised” by a Moderator. But you can PM me and I’ll send you my e-mail so we could talk openly.

I am a cradle Catholic…but my brother in law did convert through the SSPX. The SSPX has no RCIA program. He had one on one instruction with our priest. They met every 2 weeks for almost a year.

As someone who is a child of Vatican II and went to 12 years of Catholic schools, I have to say his instruction was far better than mine ever was.

If you have questions I would suggest you talk to the priest.

I have been attending an SSPX chapel for about 12 years so If you have any specific questions please feel free to PM me.

You certainly can. One joins the Roman Catholic Church through baptism. You’ll not get a more solid catechisis than you will at an SSPX chapel.

Since it is permissible to assist at an SSPX Mass, you should attend.

Yes the SSPX IS in union with the Pope as he has stated multiple times. Their canonical status is irregular and both the Vatican and the SSPX are working to remedy that situation via regular meetings in Rome. The next such meeting will happen in a week or two.

In the meantime, it IS permissible to assist at an SSPX Mass.

**Since the SSPX holds to a separatist postion presently, when it abandons it and is in full regular communion, I will gladly attend.

When SSPX is reconciled, I shall rejoice greatly.**

Sorry Bishop, the “you” I was referring to was the original poster. Not that I wouldn’t love to see Your Grace offer a Solemn High Pontifical Mass at an SSPX Chapel. It appears we are both praying for the same thing so hopefully our prayers, united with the prayers of all other Catholics, will move all involved to accept and follow God’s grace and wisdom in this matter.

By the way, are you allowed to offer Mass in the Latin rite?

It is my personal opinion that since the Pope has declared that the SSPX have no active ministry in the Church and the fact that for the past 20 odd years priests of the SSPX have been suspended of their duties by the authority of Rome, yet continue to offer illicit Masses, that one should look elsewhere to join the Church.

While a SSPX priest may tow the theological line, I think it a severe contradiction that they can continue to act in disobedience to the proper legitimate authority of the Church by offering illicit Masses.

Good to know! I have heard so many different opinions I was a bit confused, but if they’re in union with the pope that clears it up for me.

I converted through the SSPX in '98. It was a great experience. The Priest was extremely knowledgable. I was always amazed a his ability to answer any question I posed; and it was not just an answer, but the answer. I was always struck by that.

We used the Baltimore Catechims #3. We met for about an hour at a time once per week. It was one-on-one with myself and the Priest. I began the classes in late December 1997 or early January 1998, and was conditionally re-baptized on March 12, 1998. I was then confirmed on May 9, 1998.

If you convert through the SSPX you will enter the Church with a solid faith and a clear understanding of what the Church teaches. There will be no political correctness or Liberalsim in your formation; just pure undiluted Catholicism. You’ll have to put up with some name-calling, but it will be worth it.

Yet, Rome has confirmed that it is acceptable to assist at an SSPX Mass. Perhaps Rome knows something about the SSPX that is lost on the casual observer?

since SSPX and other similar bodies who prefer the tridentine Mass, or EF, primarily because of their issues with the liturgical reforms of the 20th c, including some of those dating from V2, reject most or all of those liturgical changes to the Mass and sacramental rites, they by definition probably reject RCIA, a reform enacted following V2 and stemming from the same liturgical movement. So by definition it would seem that if one wishes to be received into the Church by one of their priests, RCIA will not play any part. If you have question about whether your reception and preparation for the sacraments with this priest or parish would be valid, contact your diocesan bishop and find out.

Rome has confirmed that it is acceptable to assist at an SSPX Mass under certain stringent guidelines, such as you are not acting in a schismatic frame of mind and you attend for a desire of the TLM. Some maintain that you shouldn’t receive communion because it implies a unity that does not exist. Also, the question is vague as to whether a SSPX Mass fulfills the Sunday obligation if there are diocesan Masses close by. There is also something to be said that SSPX priests cannot validly (except under exceptional circumstances) hear confessions or celebrate marriages. With all of that in mind, coupled with Pope Benedict saying not just once but twice this year that the SSPX has no active ministry in the Church, there is reason enough that one can legitimately suppose that there is something deficient in the practice of the Church within the SSPX. As I said before, the fact that a priest who knows that he does not licitly celebrate the Mass, yet continues to do it, says to me that he is, at best, disobedient and, at worst, possibly schismatic.

The Holy See has been most charitable to the SSPX; tell me, will you still continue your support for the society if the Holy See makes a declaration against them?

There have been several threads on this board dealing with RCIA “problems”. Read them carefully.

Tim,

The question may only be vague to you and I could care less what some maintain. You said it in the first sentence of your post “Rome has confirmed that it is acceptable to assist at an SSPX Mass…”

Even if there are 100 conditions attached to it, it is a fact EVEN THOUGH the SSPX exercises no valid ministry. And it would be mortal sin if what he really meant to say was that if you assist at an SSPX Mass, you are obliged to immediately go to your nearest Novus Ordo and sit through another mass to fulfill your Sunday obligation.

And as to what will happen if the Vatican “rules against” the SSPX, I don’t think you understand what these discussions are all about. It is not trial where each side presents their case to the pope and in the end he bangs a gavel and pronounces guilty or innocent. The pope, as the Vicar Of Christ, understands that, to a certain extent, nearly 1 million Catholic souls are at stake including many good priests, nuns, and brothers. An enormous bounty! Likewise, the priests of the SSPX understand the criticality of the success of these discussions - namely, an interpretation of the ambiguities of the Council in the light of Catholic tradition and in consonance with the eternal magisterium. The Pope, writing as Cardinal Ratzinger has stated many of the same sentiments. I think we have the formula and the will for success. Both the Vicar of Christ and the Superior General of the Society both have a heart for these faithful and an obligation for a successful outcome. So call me a whimp for not answering your question about what I’d do, but if you ask me what I’d do if my wife were killed in a plane crash, I also would not have an answer because I have not considered the situation.
