Hello everyone,

I have a question for my tradional catholic friends. I have a coworker who I have some discussion with about our faith and him belonging to SSPX has told me he has asked his priest about what I tell him and he said his priest told him I would be going to hell for being “modern” catholic. Now I’m no saint 😛 but I told him his priest couldn’t say that and he didn’t like that. He always tells me how he can’t go to any of the “modern” catholic churches that I go to which are not SSPX or else he will go to hell. I don’t understand why they teach them such things. He doesn’t believe in reading the bible since his priest has told him only he can interprit the bible for them, let alone reading the catechism. :confused:I dunno what to say but I feel bad that he is so ignorant and hard headed and tells me I’m going to hell for being a Catholic.

Long story short is there anything I can tell him to get him off that crazy track? Or should I just keep my mouth shut and pray to God for him?

Thanks 😃

Yes there is something you can say: Tell him that another person (that would be me) who attends an SSPX chapel said that there is more to being a good Catholic than judging other people who do NOT attend an SSPX chapel.

Please do not listen to the people who say such things. They are spouting bad theology and giving bad example of those of us who do attend SSPX churches. It’s hard enough to be a faithful Catholic in this day and age without having to listen to such confusing drivel.

I’m sorry you had to deal with that. Totally NOT cool.

Thank you very much 🙂 I know not all SSPX are like him but I often wonder if in reality his priest is preaching that message in the pulpit if everyone who attends is just like him?

God bless 👍

Consider what they’ve told you in this light: SSPX is not in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church.

Pray for your for your friend.

Which SSPX Church is he attending and what is the Priests name? I would like to contact him and see if he is really saying any of this.

Thanks 👍

Yes, pray for him. Pray that he stop defying our Lord’s church.

There ARE traditional ROMAN Catholic Masses for those who feel unhappy with the ‘new’ Mass, but aren’t interested in schism.

One flock, one bishop! Love, respect and follow His Holiness Benedict XVI !!

Yeah, show him this that was proclaimed by the Extraordinary Magisterium:

Pope Boniface VIII in his Papal Bull Unam Sanctam (A.D. 1302): “We declare, say, define, and pronounce that it is absolutely necessary for the salvation of every human creature to be subject to the Roman Pontiff.”

Or is he restricted from reading papal documents as well? Seriously, not reading Sacred Scripture? I am speechless. . . Does he not know the benefits of Lectio Divina? The apologetic knowledge to gain? The unspeakable depths of typology? Knowing our past? Seeing the words of our Lord? What ignorance!

The church he goes to is OUR LADY IMMACULATE CHURCH as to which father I have no idea.

It depends who you ask…some people are like that, alot of people aren’t like that. It is the same for priests. The parish where i attend mass has nine priests…i have never heard even one say that if some one attends a mass outside the SSPX they will go to hell. Never. I’ve been in that parish for 15 years. Have i heard parishoners say it? Yeah…ok…BUT that doesn’t mean it’s the concensous of every one who is in an SSPX parish. I have to roll my eyes and just chalk it up to stupidity. We will be surprised to see who isn’t in heaven…and even more surprised to see who is.🤷

wow that is a great quote from the pope. I have no idea why he says what he says or believes. I’m chalking it up to pure ignorance or misunderstanding. Him and I have stopped having these discussions at work because people get “annoyed” but hopefully soon we will sit down and chat again :).

Thanks everyone

God bless

Note that a Roman Catholic cannot fulfill the Sunday obligation by attending a SSPX Sunday Mass. If you do attend (on Sunday or otherwise), you should also refrain from receiving communion.

Read CAF Apologetics on it.

That is a very outdated answer. The SSPX status has changed in the past 7 years. Their Bishops are no longer excommunicated and they have in fact celebrated Mass at the Vatican. They status is indeed irregular though. Please read up on more current information then an answer from 2005.

My apologies.

As you appear to have more recent information, could you expand on how their irregular status pertains to Roman Catholics attending and participating at an SSPX Mass? Are they in full communion with Rome?

EDIT: The link I provided is also provided in this Jan 17, 2012 CAF Apologetics thread. Do I follow it, or do you have something that refutes it?

I totally agree Jen, who knows who we will see in heaven. Also I have been reading up on the whole SSPX situation and I don’t want this thread to turn into a schism vs. not schism fest.

Thank you!

I found this interesting …

Msgr. Camille Perl, long-time secretary for the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei (PCED), has repeatedly affirmed in personal letters that such Catholics incur no penalty and no sin for merely fulfilling one’s Sunday obligation at a church or chapel served by the SSPX.

Personal letters from Msgr. Camille Perl are not offical positions and teachings of the Catholic Church.

The rest of the article (both of your links link to the same article) is based off interviews and the opinions of Cardinal Castrillón, who is no no longer a Cardinal, for he retired in 2009.

Since you have stated that we need recent items, could you provide something more recent (your article is just two years after the CAF Apologetics one) and something perhaps a bit more authoritative and less speculative? Also, do you have anything from something other than The Remnant?

It shouldn’t be surprising that certain SSPX communities have devolved into nothing but cults. This is natural. When we separate ourselves from Rome in a practical way—the Society gives a lot of lip-service to Rome’s authority but flout it in practise—we will slowly but surely rot away.

Just think what Saint Peter’s name signifies. Rock. Really think about that. This world is a mass of swirling rapids. But we have a rock to hold on to for dear life. An immovable rock that will not falter. If we let go… then we will be lost in the torrent.

This is why we need to pray that the SSPX do not let go any further than they have.

My link was messed up for some reason. I was posting a link to the lifting of the excommunications.

I am not exactly sure what you want. The answers given by a Cardinal and a Msgr hold more weight in my mind then any given on these forums. Also the fact that the Sspx excommunications were lifted and were allowed to have Masses in the Vatican should show that it is not sinful to attend their Masses.

Private Masses at the Vatican, not public. Slight difference.

The Neocatechumenal Way has done stuff in the Vatican as well. I’m certain that you have no issues with them at all, yes?

I thought every Catholic priest had faculties in Rome? Like Jerusalem.
