SSPX-SO - new group status?

I have heard that there is a new splinter group from the SSPX formed in the Virginia, USA area calling themselves the “SSPX-SO” (Society of St. Pius X – Strict Observance) because they disagree with certain aspects of what Bp. Fellay is doing in his discussions with Rome. Has anyone here been following this, and what, if any does this mean with regards to this “new” group of Catholics? Are they regarded as the same as the SSPX when the Church thinks of them (valid but illicit priests/sacraments), and are this new group truly schismatic, unlike the ordinary SSPX?

They’ll have the same status of the “normal” SSPX.

If the “SSPX-SO” consecrates Bishops, they’re done.
 
This whole thing sounds kind of familiar. Now how could that be? :hmmm: My, but history does seem to repeat itself.

Anyway, if they make this saga into a movie (a “B” movie at best) they can use the following free-of-charge:

Title: “SSPX-SO”
Subtitle: “Shades of the SSPV”

Isn’t this why we have a pontiff. It’s just like with the protestant denominations. Without obedience to authority we fall apart, falling to our own whims.
 
Strict Observance was the name of a Masonic order of the 18th century that claimed to be descended from the Knights Templar. They weren’t on good terms with the Pope, either.

Carthusians, if memory serves, are officially Cistercians of the Strict Observance. They are on excellent terms with the Pope 🤷
 
I have been learning quite a bit about this group recently. I was very chagrined to find an ‘independent’ Catholic church operating down the road from me that I never realized was there!

The ‘priest’ at this church was not even part of the SSPX, but had separated himself awhile ago. Then over the summer (or maybe earlier) when the discussions were going on between the Vatican and the SSPX, a few SSPX priests in South America were disciplined and joined up with the VA priest to form this new group.

Now with Bishop Williamson gone from SSPX, he will be meeting with the VA group to potentially ordain another bishop for their splinter-splinter group. :mad:

It makes my head spin! And yes, it sounds exactly like the various protestant groups splitting over how much water you needed to baptism someone (sprinkling vs emmersion) so something of the kind.

I pray that this group, if it forms (heaven forbid that!), doesn’t actually make VA it’s main headquarters. I can just imagine the drama if they do. Hopefully, they will be like the Amish and go find a nice quiet place without a lot of people. 😦

Oh, that is rich!!! Given the way they rail about the Masons and their black helicoipters…
 
Now, where I have I heard something very much like this before? :hmmm: Let me see … ah! I know …could it be the SSPV? :eek: Well, I guess history **does **repeat itself, doesn’t it? 🤷

Maybe they’ll make this saga into a movie (a grade “B” one at best), and if they title it “SSPX-SO” they’re welcome to use the subtitle “Shades of the SSPV” at no charge. 😛

Strict Observance is used by the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (OSCO) which is a reformed branch of Benedictine monasticism over one thousand years old. St. Bernard is one of the founders. They were formed in France in the eleventh century.

They have always been in good standing with the Church and I have been to retreats at the local Cistercian monstery here in suburban Atlanta several times.

“Strict Observance” is a very old title and doesn’t mean that a group is at odds with the Holy See.

Mrs. Sally, I am surprised to read this from you.

Wouldn’t this be a good time, having them so close to you, to do special penances and add a few extra prayers for the scales to fall from their eyes?

What a golden opportunity for you during this Year of Faith - an evangelizer’s dream come true! :D:)👍
 
Personally, I don’t find anything amusing about this new turn of events.

Many prayers are needed.

Well… Let’s just say that I find it extremely ironic. :rolleyes:

For a student of history, watching history repeat itself can be amusing.

The formation of the Discalced SSPX should be… er… interesting.
