POPE’S FINAL ACTIVITIES, POSSIBILITY OF A MOTU PROPRIO, RELATIONSHIP WITH THE SOCIETY OF ST. PIUS X
Vatican City, 21 February 2013 (VIS) – This morning Fr. Federico Lombardi, director of the Holy See Press Office, presented information related to the Holy Father’s calendar and clarified some issues that have been raised in the past few days.​

**Regarding the issue of the Society of St. Pius X, he reaffirmed that the date of 22 February to decide the issue is pure hypothesis and that Benedict XVI has decided to entrust the matter to the next Pope, therefore, a definition of relations with that society should not be expected by the end of this pontificate.

Thanks for that, will check it out makes more sense, yet I wonder where Vatican Insider got their information from. Seems only from a religious in France who was quoted in a French newspaper. It did seem suspicious that CNS or VIS was not carrying the story.

SSPX is an acronym for the Priestly Society of St. Pius X. Their situation within the Church is very complicated…The SSPX was founded by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in the wake of the crisis of faith brought on by the entrance of the “smoke of Satan” (quote from Venerable Paul VI) into the Church during the Second Vatican Council and the general downward spiral that occurred with the Council. Originally they were in good standing with the Holy See, then they were officially dissolved, but still remained…eventually a deal was worked out between Rome (Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now the Holy Father) and the archbishop wherein he would be allowed to consecrate a new bishop and the Society would once again be recognized. Archbishop Lefebvre made a big screw up in 1988 when he and Bishop Castro de Mayer consecrated four bishops in express defiance of Pope John Paul’s order. Supposedly this was a schismatic act which automatically excommunicated all involved parties. Blah blah blah…a few years ago Pope Benedict rescinded the excommunications of the surviving bishops, but the Society is still in a state of “limbo.”

Honestly I don’t know whether or not they are in schism; regardless, they DO NOT have faculties to hear confessions, and they are canonically irregular.

So that’s who they are. If I’ve gotten anything mixed up, I’m sorry, feel free to correct me if you know better.

But the big deal is the progress that was made towards reconciliation during Pope Benedict’s pontificate is about to end. And this is very, very sad.

I wish everyone had the wonderful, devout, and reverant priests we have here in Arlington. I am joining my prayers to yours, especially today on the Feast of the Chair of St Peter. Praying all Catholic priests everywhere are fully reconcilled to the Holy Father (Pope Benedict now and whoever our new Holy Father is next month) - both in form (SSPX and others) and in spirit (all those who are formally in full communion, but who do crazy things like have liturgical dancers or talks on the enneagram at their parishes).

Several years ago when someone would mention these sorts of activities at the LA Congress, which are neither unique nor rare by the way, many of the more progressive among us said that theposters were either exagerrating, misinterpreting things or flat out lying. When videos appeared they were questioned as being authentic or of actually happening in the concept of a Mass. In fact some were asked pointedly to provide proof that these things occurred and exactly where, when and in what context. In fact these sorts of things, common at the LA Congress for mant many years, were trumpeted as being marvelous displays of piety and something that every one should aspire to having in their own Diocese and Parish., and even if things did occasionally get out of hand, it was perfectly fine as the appropriate Cardinal , had no knowledge of them and thus the Archdiocese nor he could not be held responsible for their content.

When videos surfaced proving that the Cardinal had in fact been in attendance along with numerous other clergy the videos were said to outright fakes or compilations put together in vain attempts to discredit this very progressive Diocese and the Cardinal.

I am glad to see that the progressives have not yet attacked this post in the same way.

Yeah the barefoot dancing girls in their form fitting black shifts- 6 or 8 of them, were ever-present. I don’t think I could have made it through the responsorial psalm without their leading the crowd through interpretive movement. Between them and the giant dangling mobiles and the light show and the rock band and the choir singing all the responses for us- I guess they don’t think the high schoolers attend Mass often enough to have learned them- it was quite a spectacle. If Cirque du Soleil does a new production called “Mssa” they could adapt it!

But to the ultra-progressives, isn’t Lent obsolete (except for Ash Wednesday) along with confession, being in a state of grace to receive the Eucharist, the Latin language in toto, the primacy of the papacy (vs. collegiality), mortal sin in general (only the fundamental option applies), etc. etc?

MIke, after the youth Mass yesterday at the LA REC Youth Day, I figure I need to attend at least two Tridentine masses over the weekend to recalibrate myself. One of them will probably have to be at the SSPX chapel, in fact, considering that in the entire Diocese of San Bernardino there are exactly two Tridentine masses offered per week, both at the same church and one of them is at 6:30 am

That’s a bit too snarky for my tastes. Especially during Lent. There have been severa very long threads with many people offering prayers for reconciliation. Since we have heard that there wasn’t a required February 22 deadline there isn’t necessarily anymore inaction than usually.
