Question directed at SSPX members: What do you think of the documents in Vatican II that promote eastern catholicism? Is this diversity good? Do you feel the latin rite is a superior rite? Do you feel that a married priesthood in the eastern rites is an abomination? What would archbishop marcel lefebvre think?

Although I am not an SSPXer, I have read a bit about the life and career of Archbishop LeFebrve.
The Archbishop was well aware of the Oriental Rites of the church and would have worked closely with them during his many years in Africa and as Superior General of the Holy Ghost Fathers.

There are married priests in the Latin Rite too. Why on earth would such a thing be an abomination? Its not even Church doctrine. Its only a discipline!

I remember reading somewhere that Archbishop Lefebvre thought that a married priesthood in Eastern Catholicism was a matter of ‘toleration’.

the original post infers that the Church is only Roman Catholic. From the beginning, the diviersity of rites, traditions, and practices of the individual Churches has always been a recognition of the mark of catholicity in the Church.

It is only with the mindset that everything must be uniform in the Roman way and roman perspective that causes this kind of thing. How ludircrous to say that the Latin Rite is better than any other Rite. The other rites are ancient.

The OP asked for SSPX members views on Eastern catholic rites. Laypeople are just Catholics who attend their chapels. As only their priests, brothers nuns and deacons(?) are actually members of SSPX, then we might have to wait a bit for one to reply.

Regardless of what anyone says, I’d like everyone to remember and observe the following.

All Oriental Churches have full Apostolic Succession. Those that are in full communion with the Pontiff are truly Catholic. Therefore, any opinion that diminishes either the Oriental Churches or the Church of Rome, or any opinion that diminishes the Eastern and Latin Rites by unfair comparisons is forbidden. Such opinions are disrespectful to the unity of the Catholic Church and to her diversity, which has been part of her character since Apostolic times.

I don’t think I said anything out of line. I simply wanted the issue of celibacy from the SSPX position, since I respect both the tradition of the eastern rites and the SSPX. SSPX have serious problems with Vatican II, and I was wondering if the promotion of the eastern rites was one of them.

From what I have seen, through the Transpline Redemptorists, they SSPX promoted a very latinized version of the Byzantine Rite.

I think where you go out of line is the instance on the use of “rite” rather than “Churches” as a rite is something a Church belongs to, the people belong to a Church.

It can be seen as offensive to Eastern Catholics when this acknowledgement is left out. We have our own bishops, our own heirarchy, that is in communion with Rome.

I do not particually take offense at this but there are those out there who do and there are those out there who mean to be offensive when they say it in this manner, just something to keep in mind.

That, and Bp. Williamson ordained a bunch of priests for the SSJK… another highly latinized group, tho the SSJK are excommunicated, unlike the Transalpine Redemptorists.

I think a lot of people unintentionally use “rite” because its easier to say “rite” than “sui juris Church” or “particular Church”.

Oh but the ignorant love to speak on which they know nothing of. 😉

The Priestly Society of St Josaphat do promote at least one authenic Eastern tradition, the use of Church Slavonic. Ironically it seems to be one of the traditions the Eastern Catholic hierarchy has little interest in restoring.

Traditionally the liturgy is celebrated in the vernacular, the language of the people. So adherence to a language that no one in the congregation knows any longer is not an “authentic Eastern tradition”.

Any way, even if they promote every single “authentic Eastern Tradition” they are still excommunicated from the Church.

Not that long ago, Angelqueen had a Traditional and Eastern Mass locator (think it needs updating) which listed links to SSPX masses and Eastern Rite liturgies on the same page. I don’t know alot about who runs that site but it does seem sympathetic to both the SSPX and other Traditional Catholics.
