I do think this is a little bit of a sticky situation–it might be interesting to ask one of the apologists about this one. I don’t think that anyone should ever choose to go to the Mass, but I do believe it is a viable last chance deal. Isn’t it also acceptable to go to a Byzantine Mass–a priest I know was talking about going to the cities with a group of us because he has always wanted to concelebrate a byzantine Mass, and he is a very solid priest. I would say these Masses are decently Catholic. The EF doesn’t allow for any type of interpretation or creativeness to be added into the Mass. The SSPX follow the rules of the Mass—they didn’t just make it up.

They may have the faculties, but I have seen a lot of atrocious OF Masses that are borderline not valid.
 
So again the question, since they are suspended and shouldn’t be saying Mass in the first place, how Catholic is their Mass?

It’s pretty Catholic when they are allowed to say Mass when they’re at the Vatican. 🙂

No – you are not correct. The SSPX is not sede.

Ahh gotcha. I was taught incorrectly. That would be my fault. Thank you for correcting me though, that is good to know. I have an SSPX friend, I guess I should have asked her if they were actually schismatic or sedevacantists–but I guess that is kind of a weird question to ask people…

You do know that there are Byzantine Catholics, right? I highly doubt an Orthodox priest will allow just any Catholic priest to concelebrate. I’m talking about the Orthodox Liturgy, not Eastern Catholic Liturgy. Of course any Catholic of any Rite can attend any Liturgy by any Church in communion with the Bishop of Rome.

And thats the distinction there. The Orthodox Divine Liturgy and the Catholic Divine Liturgy, both of the Byzantine Rite, are said exactly the same. The only clear difference is that the Pope is commemorated in Catholic Divine Liturgies. So how a Liturgy is said does not have any effect on it being Catholic.

There are no degrees to validity. Its either valid or not. In this case, it is.
