Today the Latin Church commemorates the holy Hieromartyr Andrew Kim Taegon. I have decided to share him with you, my Eastern brethren. He is one of my favorite saints. He was the first Korean-born priest. He lived from 1821 to 1846. He died a martyr for Christ. May his prayers be with us and, especially, with the Korean people.
“Your holy hieromartyr Andrew Kim Taegon, O Lord, received the crown of immortality from you, O our God, on account of his struggle. Armed with your strength, he has vanquished his persecutors and crushed the powerless arrogance of demons. Through his supplications, O Christ God, save our souls.” - Troparion for Martyrs (Tone 4)
From St Andrew Kim Taegon’s letter Bishop Jean Joseph Ferréol:
The mandarin said to me: “Are you a Christian?”
“Yes, I am,” I answered.
“Why do you practise this religion contrary to the king’s orders? Give it up.”
“I practice my religion because it is true; it teaches me to know God, and brings me to eternal happiness: I know of no such thing as apostasy.”

From St Andrew Kim Taegon’s last letter before his martyrdom:
“We will soon be going out to the battlefield. Take good care and let us meet again in heaven. I love you and cannot forget you. I beg you, in these troubled times do not be led astray. Pray to the Lord day and night to overcome the world, the flesh and the devil. Be steadfast in persecution, put eternal glory first and work for the salvation of your souls.”
