What’s the difference between '45 SAM and the '62 missal of another publisher?

I know of two significant changes. One is that Pope Pius XII completely revised the ritual of Holy Week in 1955. The other is that Pope Bl. John XIII removed “perfidious” from the Good Friday prayer for the Jews, and added St. Joseph’s name to the Roman Canon in his 1962 revision.

An expert might be able to tell you of a few more differences, but those are assuredly the most significant. God bless 🙂

It would be fine to use, if you’re just starting out with the EF Mass.

I used a St. Andrew Missal from 1939 this past Holy Week and found out that there used to be 12 (count them) readings at the Easter Vigil – after 1955 it was changed to 4. On palm Sunday the priest’s hand was kissed as he handed you the palm branch – that too was changed in 1955.

Outside of Holy Week being a bit different, some of the feast days of the saints may not be included, or celebrated on different days. 🙂

The S.A.M. version I have is from 1957. It like so many Missals from that era do not have the Propers in latin; English only.

Other than that its fine.

I wouldn’t say that the Holy Week rites were “completely” revised, but there were significant changes made. Also:

—Mass for the feast of the Assumption was replaced with another Mass in 1950
—the system of ranking feasts underwent significicant changes in 1955 and 1960. Gone were double and semi-double feasts, and instead only 1st-2nd-3rd class feasts
—Some new saints were added, and a few other feasts were removed
—The number of days where 2nd and 3rd collects were said were reduced, and there were no more “standing orders” to add additional collects for the Holy Father, saints, Our Lady on days where these were no related to the feast
—The last gospel was always used, except on Palm Sunday. There were no longer any “proper” last gospels from suppressed feasts.
—Four new optional prefaces–the so-called Gallican prefaces–were added to the appendix. These are for advent season, the Blessed Sacrament, All Saints and patrons, and the dedication of a Church.
—The *confiteor *before communion was supressed in 1960, though that practice still lived on in some places.
—Rubrical revisions were made in 1960, which included the celebrant and deacon sitting and listening to the singing of the epistle, rather than remaining at the altar and reading the epistle silently. Similarly, the gospel was no longer read silently by the celebrant and subdeacon before the deacon sang it. Permission was given for a lector in at least minor orders to sing the epistle at a Missa Cantata.
—The priest no longer wore a violet cope and stole to bless candles before Mass on the feast of the Purification or the palms on Palm Sunday. These were changed to white and red, respectively.

On palm Sunday the priest’s hand was kissed as he handed you the palm branch – that too was changed in 1955.
No, the 1955 Holy Week rites still include the kissing of the priest’s hand when receiving the palms on Palm Sunday and the candles on the feast of the Purification, aka Candlemas.

Maybe that was just for Solemn High Mass, where I went it was not done.

The Pater Noster was said/chanted during the Good Friday Mass of the Presanctified by the congregation with the priest after the 1955 changes.

Except for during Holy Week, they are so similar you could use either one.

I use Fr. Lasance Missal, which is good except it doesn’t have the new feasts.

I am planning to buy a 1962 missal, either from Baronius or Angelus Press
