I would appreciate if anyone could give an answer to the following question: How can I use the St. Andrew’s Misal to follow the Mass? Thanks. Antonio M. Bird,Jr.

The St. Andrew’s Missal is designed to be utilized for the pre-Vatican II Mass, called the Tridentine Mass, or sometimes referred to as the Latin Mass. The Missal cannot be effectively used for the modern Mass - also called the Novus Ordo Mass.

To use the Missal, you will want to start in the middle of the Missal which holds the canon of the Latin Mass, starting on page 951 with “The Asperges” for a High Mass (Sunday Mass). I place the white ribbon there for the start of Mass. For the bulk of the liturgy, you will follow along with the priest with the canon of the Mass that starts with page 951. You can follow along in Latin or in English, depending on your Latin proficiency.

Each Mass has a different Introit, Collect, etc. In the canon, when it states that the priest will read the Introit, for example, you would then flip to the other section of the Missal to read the Introit of the day. You would place a second ribbon for the readings for that day in that section of the Missal. So, for example, for next Sunday, I place a red ribbon on page 655, which contains the readings for the Second Sunday after Easter.

For prayers after Communion, I usually turn to page 1012 and read the Prayers to Jesus Crucified. The Missal contains prayers that can be said before and after Mass as well.

What’s nice about the St. Andrew’s Missal is the extensive commentary, and the fact that the Missal contains all the Mass readings for the entire liturgical year.

Thanks for your reply to my question. You reply has been useful to me since I attend a Mass in Spanish * and I can use “La Palabra” to which I am subscribed to follow the Mass and the Misal to say the payers after receiving the Eucharist.*
