I have a question regarding the 1962 missal. I have heard it mentioned several times. I was wondering when it was written in 1962, was the mass at that time the same that had been said for hundreds of years or were there changes happening in the mass that caused them to write a new missal or was that missal written then for different reasons. I guess what I am trying to ask is why was a new missal written in 1962 and what significance does it have to the TLM mass.

I recently found a 1956 St. Andrews missal and I am just trying to figure out if there is a difference in the mass from the 1956 missal to the 1962 missal. Also, is the mass in the 1956 missal the same as in the 1962 missal? Are they both the TLM?

I understand differences after that time but prior to that I am a little confused.

Thanks.

yes. We got a St Andrew Missal after first communion in 2nd grade (1957) and had to get another in Jr. High (1962) and still another by the time we graduated high school (1967) but at that time there was no permanent missal so those were the years of the infamous “handouts”. I did not get another permanent missal until by first child began Catholic school (1976) but it was outdated almost as soon as I bought it. I stuck with annuals until, you guessed it, 1999, which also was rapidly obsoleted. I am through with permanent missals, and use mine for “props” to illustrate sacramental meetings.

For some reason I thought that the last edition of the St Andrew Missal was 1945, but I suppose it could have been reprinted.

Anyway, the degree of difference with 1962 would depend to a degree on what is has for Holy Week. The old rites were replaced by the “revised” Holy Week rites of 1955, and it is those “revised” rites which appear in the 1962 editio typica (with, IIRC, one small modification) and which (with another slight modification) are used today in the EF.

Beyond that, the differences are quite minor, and are mostly in the calendar (particularly the designation of feasts), plus a few minor rubrics and the addition of St Joseph’s name to the Canon. The Propers and the bulk of the Ordinary, are the same.

I have a St. Andrews Missal which has a 1952 Imprimi Potest and a 1953 Imprimatur.

My Fr. Lasance Missal has a 1945 Imprimatur.

My Latinless (except for the Mass Ordinary) St. Joseph Missal has a 1959 Imprimatur.

Anyone can be used by the laity in preparing for or following along the 1962 Missal, at least outside Holy Week.

I just ordered a St. Andrew’s Missal circa 1943.
It was suggested to me by a couple people in my EF only parish as the one that will never change and will be “up to date” forever.

I thought the EF was according to th e1962 missal, but I beg to be instructed if otherwise.

Wouldn’t that one have the old Good Friday prayer that John XXIII changed?

Yes, the EF according to SP can only be said with the 1962 John XXIII missal. The only difference, as someone pointed out, is that St Joseph appears in the Canon and J23 changed the feast classifications. My grandmother uses her St Andrew Missal at the local FSSP still.

That being said, my brother knows a priest who uses the 54 missal. He calls this priest a maverick!

you may find a few differences between the St. Andrews Missal and the 1962 Missal, but not much. I wouldn’t bother with even ordering the Angelus Press missal as it is produced in conjuction with the SSPX and at this point they are not in communion with Rome. Please pray that the SSPX, which is wonderful priestly society will be reunited with Rome once again

The calendar (vigils, Octaves) was significantly changed in 1955, also at that time the previous 3 collects/secrets/postcommunions for almost each day was reduced to one. The proper of saints too changed significantly since the previous (1920) typical edition of the Roman Missal.

Pius XII expected significant changes in the near furure in 1955 and for this reason he prohibited any new typical edition either for the Office and the Missal. In 1960 Blessed John XXIII rewrote the Rubrics, and ordered the new typical edition

The only change in 1962 (the time of the new typical edition) was adding St Joseph to the Canon (Communicantes)

The 1960 mass can be followed from any previous Missal, with insert for the new saints.

Correction. I should have identified the above as hand missals, distinct from the 1962 Altar Missal, which is all Latin.

Indeed. This is not acceptable for saying the Mass, even for suspended priests.
I was once in a Mass of an Institute of Christ priest, who read the regular three collects etc for a ferial Mass. Also a guest priest a year ago in our Parish always read the three prayers. I suppose that they added St Joseph to the Canon.

In the good old times there were many priests who kept the pre 1955 rubrics: they learned in that way, and the bishops did not emphasized the new rubrics. It was considered as a permission to be able to finish the Mass in the 30 minutes time frame if necessary.

The top site promoting the EF sells the Angelus missal. They are in full communion with Rome.

The EF mass can only be said with the 1962 missal? Who is the SP?
I’m asking because I am trying to learn all I can about traditional masses and I want to know what different things mean?

Thanks

I can’t instruct anyone. I am brand new (couple of months) to the TLM. I suppose I misspoke. Sorry.

thank you for this nostalgic thread. The St Andrew missal was standard issue for parochial school children after 1st communion in my day, and required for confirmation, and I actually found one in the office when I took this job, and treasure it.

well aware of St. John’s Cantius and the Angelus Press missal. Yes the St. John’s Cantius is in full communion with Rome, but the SSPX is not and that is good enough reason not to use the Angelus Press which is in conjunction with the SSPX. Again, please pray that the SSPX and Rome will reach an agreement
