Hi. I’m in the middle of preparing a paper for an undergraduate degree on the Doctrine of the Atonement, and I wondered whether some of you could offer some advice and sources for me.

Kent, W. (1907). Doctrine of the Atonement. In The Catholic Encyclopedia. New York: Robert Appleton Company. newadvent.org/cathen/02055a.htm

Jesuit Fr. Thomas Rausch, professor of theology, Loyola Marymount University (Los Angeles) that wrote Who Is Jesus? said regarding penal substitution:

This is still dominant in evangelical theology, and though Catholics occasionally talk this way, the church has never formally made Anselm’s theology its own. It remains theology, not doctrine. To this day, Catholic theology places more emphasis on incarnation, while Protestant theology places more on the redemption.

Anselm can be contrasted with St. Thomas Aquinas (Summa Thelogiae III, q. 46, a. 2, ad 3.) which is different since the debt is a moral injustice to be righted (not penal).

For a contrasting patristic sources see St. Athanasius of Alexandria, On The Incarnation. newadvent.org/fathers/2802.htm
