Known for his bold preaching and austere lifestyle, Anthony also had a reputation as a worker of miracles, which often came about in the course of his disputes with heretics.

His biographers mention a horse, which refused to eat for three days, and accepted food only after it had placed itself in adoration before the Eucharist that Anthony brought in his hands. Another miracle involved a poisoned meal, which Anthony ate without any harm after making the sign of the Cross over it. And a final often recounted miracle of St. Anthony’s involved a group of fish, who rose out of the sea to hear his preaching when heretical residents of a city refused to listen.

I loved reading the Flowers of St Francis which included stories of St Anthony as well. The preaching to the fish is a long time favorite.

St Anthony, pray for us and send us holy men and women of God!

Dear St. Anthony, his beautiful name is appearing in two disgusting stories that we face hourly on every news medium, many times back-to-back! St. Anthony, pray for those involved in the Anthony murder and for those in the scandal in Washington, D.C. May your name never again be heard in such unworthy circumstances.

Five times I have asked St. Anthony of Padua to help my 25-year old daughter find something that she lost, and five times, she has found the lost thing.

A few weeks ago, her hamster, Moses, went missing out of his cage. Moses was gone for several days, and my daughter asked me to appeal to St. Anthony. (She is a total softie when it comes to animals.)

I not only appealed to St. Anthony, but to St. Francis of Assisi as well, since he is the animal lover.

On the Sunday morning following the disappearance of Moses, my daughter went downstairs to see if he had eaten any of the food they left out in the humane traps. She didn’t see him in the traps, but she heard a rustling noise in the hamster’s cage, and sure enough, Moses was back!

My daughter said that if she ever converts to Catholicism, she will ask St. Anthony of Padua to be her patron saint!

My mother-in-law, who is Protestant, told me that she often asks St. Anthony to help her find lost things, and he does!
