Just sharing this 1520 painting by Niklaus Manuel of St. Anthony attacked by devils. It’s called Temptation of St. Anthony. Poor man. The one rooster-looking one looks to have a giant nut cracker or something and the other one a baseball bat. The middle ages apparently viewed devilish attacks more openly than we do today.

The weapon held by the demon on the right is called a “flail”.
It is an agricultural tool converted to use as a weapon.

An artist named Schongauer also produced a “Temptation of St. Anthony” that is quite good.

Thank you for posting this amazing artwork MarcoPolo and thank you for the information about the weapons Glogmung

It just goes to show that we are not alone in this fight and even the Saints were attacked and tormented by the devil and demons

Here is another website with various artists – A bit of warning some of the artwork is risqué

Thank you, Marco Polo. 🙂 Here’s another *Temptation of St. Anthony *(c. 1515), by Matthias Grünewald, also replete with monstrous tormenting creatures. (Click on the painting to enlarge.)
