Today is St Augustine’s feast day. Yesterday was St Monica’s day. I find it ironic that their feast days come right at the beginning of Burning Man…the most hedonistic week long festival of the year. I may be the only mother on this forum who has been praying for a daughter who has been going to the week of Burning Man every year for the last 6 years. It hurts when a very intelligent 30 somthing daughter believes this is a week for the “bright and artistic”. All her friends she met in Berkeley years ago and many other “bright” friends live for this week. How does a not so bright mother convince a liberal New-Ager to come home to Catholicism?

You already have identified the best weapon a Catholic mother has in her arsenal: St. Monica. Pray, pray and pray for your daughter that God will bring her home, through the intercession of St. Monica.

Just what is BURNING MAN?

Sounds like devil worshiping to me. :mad:
 
BURNING MAN is the annual convention for the so-called (and they claim the title) of the “brightest” and most artistic hedonists…pagans…v e r y new age and very liberal. After a week of hedonistic living they burn a gigantic structure that represents all their worldly concerns. they live like hippies during that week. If it is not an occasion of sin for you, you can check it out by going to their website with the obvious title. I don’t want to make it easy for anyone because not everyone should even go to their website. If those of you reading this say a prayer to St Michael maybe he can help scare away the devil who is dominating at their convention…

Thank you for your kind words. I love your name…we definitely do need to pray for priests…especially priests (x-priests) like Matthew Fox who has involved my daughter in many pagan “masses”. He has a special service once a month in Oakland that involves videos flashing, lights flashing, semi-nude dancers, lots of candles, chants, drums, etc. I went as a guest once on St Patricks day when the Irish pagans gave quite a performance. Matthew Fox believes in getting back to the roots of the pagan religions and combining them with high tech. this attracts the “Berkeley” crowd.

Most all of you know that these sorts of events are not only festivals of paganism, but they are playgrounds for the forces of spiritual darkness. I firmly believe that those who attend such events open themselves up to the real possibility of demonic oppression, and perhaps even possession. Since your daughter and the others at this convention ignore the notion of prayer, they don’t realize that your prayers have saved them from any further oppression of Satan than they might already be experiencing.
What some of our “liberal Catholic” friends fail to see is that their failure to yield to the Church’s authority leads to things like Burning Man. If you fail to yield to divinely ordained authority established by God, there is another authority you will yield to, because you have no other choice.
St Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defence against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do, thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Hosts, by the power of God, thrust into Hell Satan and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin and destruction of souls. Amen.
 
This thread is very old. Ha. I actually found this because a friend is looking for a Catholic priest that they could talk to “on playa” (that is to say: at burning man. They were curious if there are any Catholic churches there).

I thought I saw a church on playa couple of years ago, so I was looking around (If anybody knows of any churches in Black Rock City, I would love to hear about them so that I can relay the information to my friend!)

Again, this thread is really old, so maybe some of you have figured this out already, but to clear up some misconceptions:
  1. Burning Man is not pagan in any way. I’m not sure where they idea comes from, but I see it repeated pretty frequently. There are probably some pagans that go to burning man, but there are just as many Catholics, or Jews, or Muslims that go too.
  2. Burning Man is hardly hedonistic. Again, there probably are hedonists that go there, and there are groups of people participating in orgies, or drugs…sure. But those people are the overwhelming minority of people. Keep in mind that there are also orgies and drug users in EVERY CITY on Earth. This is not unique to Burning Man.
Burning Man takes place in an incredibly harsh environment, and the people that go there revel in this. That doesn’t sound much like hedonism to me…
  1. If you’ve got kids going to this…I’d say go with them! You’ll probably love it!
  2. If I’m honest, Burning Man seems like an event that Catholics would heavily agree with. It’s almost cliche, ha. You’ve got a bunch of carpenters getting together in the desert to talk to each other about universal forgiveness and acceptance.

Burning Man is 100% pagan and New Age. It is a ritual designed to exalt the individual above all things. It is a rebranding and repackaging of the “human potential” concept: you, and you alone, decide everything. This is the type of ‘radical individualism’ Pope Benedict warned us about.
