Usually a large percentage of the quotes from those quotemines without citations are spurious. It’s hard to tell what’s genuine, what’s loosely based on something actually written, or what is made up entirely.

This is a very scriptural view:

18 For, in the first place, when you assemble as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you; and I partly believe it, 19 for there must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized. I Cor 11

So, how would those who are genuine be recognized? The Apostles and their successors the Bishops were centered around the authentic Eucharist. We know by reading the Fathers that the authentic Church founded by Christ is that which is centered around the Bishop and the valid Eucharist in his care.

You are right that a greater good will arise from divisions.

Though how do you explain what happened during the Arian Heresy? When presumably only Athanasius and a few others did not espouse the heresy of Arianism? While the Eucharist is still valid, the teaching they received was clearly wrong (On part of the faithful), So while that is a great point you say it does not mean the Church can not fall into error. Were those ignorant faithful de facto outside the Church at that point then? No. So who are we to say that this has not occurred even now and that we are not aware of it?

Jesus fulfilled His promise to guide the Church into “all truth”. He cannot allow error to be taught, because that would allow the faithful to pass through the gates of hell.

This is how God preserves His Church. He always raises up saints to defend her. She cannot fall into error because her Head is Christ, and she is ensouled by the Holy Spirit. It is these divine elements that prevent the Church from error, not the human elements.

Jesus has kept His promise to lead the Church into “all Truth”. He has kept His promise to never leave her, to remain with her until the end of the age.

I trust Jesus to keep His promises, that is how I know.

I would agree with you. Tho in this case even tho it possible may not be from Augustine, it still is a good thought and stands on it’s own.

Bishop Sheen was another one who was good at making up thought provoking lines that stand on their own.
